SurfControl Sucks

Posted by: Aaron Brazell

At work, we use SurfControl to filter email and block website. I’m not the guy who configures this stuff so I don’t know the intricacies.

But I was checking out Illinigirl yesterday when my phone rang. It was Larry, one of the network guys at our location who sits across from the guy who watches the firewall.

Me: This is Aaron, how may I help you?
Larry: What are you doing?
Me: Not alot, screwing around, wasting time.
Larry: How so?
Me: Surfing the net. Why?
Larry: Watch the websites you’re visiting, dude
Me: …
Me: What the heck are you talking about?
Larry: Your IP is coming up as repeatedly hitting adult sites
Me: {me fires up Outlook and emails link} Check your mail.
Larry: I don’t need to look, I’m just telling you to watch where you’re visiting.
Me: …
Me: It’s a BLOG!

Later this was all sorted out as Surfcontrol may be too greedy. They were giving me a hard time, especially after realizing where I was visiting. With friends like this, who needs enemies?

My school uses SurfControl, and it blocks way too many sites, game sites, proxy servers, and even last year google images.

    Twitter Pitch!

Twitter pitching is a form of pitch that requires succint "what does this mean for me" kind of pitching. It is the ultimate efficiency of words. You have 140 characters or less to tell me why your pitch matters to me or my readers. Please include a means of contacting you. This is included in your 140 characters. If you send successive pitches, you will likely be ignored, unless it's obvious that the first pitch was a case of "accidental send", etc.

This form of pitching does not mean I'm being a diva. It means that my time is valuable, and you want a piece of it. It's good practice for you, and delivers your pitch in a format I want. Win-win.
