About to get Laid Off
We got the news today that there will be a 50% Reduction in Force within 2 weeks. No details as to who or what, but our agency “floated a check” for a contract expecting to pull money from another command and that never panned out. Of course, I did not know this until today.
Feelers are out with headhunters and others looking for open positions. My resume can be downloaded.

That’s awesome! I wish I could go down there too, but leaving on vacation next week. If you need a guest blogger, you know I have an opinion about everything :-)

The government has had a horrible response time for this. It’s not like Katrina was a surprise. In Florida, they always have pallets of drinking water and food ready for those taking shelter. In Louisiana, there was no such provision. It was sort of like, “Oops we forgot”.
The fact that it has taken 5 days to deploy the National Guard to the level they are at now and the deployment is not yet complete also says something. They could have easily been prepositioned to come in after the storm and preserve order. But they weren’t.
Nobody expected the levy to break. Well, that’s not true. Someone had a prophetic eye for the future. But virtually no-one expected the disaster level it has become.
However, even without the flooding, there was a hurricane coming in. And it was big. And it was expected to do alot of damage. And… And… And…
When I say deploy the troops, I don’t want them to go in with guns a’blazin. But anarchy can’t be tolerated. At least in my eyes.

Apology accepted, Paul. We can get together another time. I know you have alot on your plate. Sean has his issue with his grandmother. People have shit happen. Acceptable. I just prefer not getting stood up by four people…

Contracting sucks doesn’t it…
Contracting sucks doesn’t it…
Well I don’t know if contracting as a whole sucks so much as working on a contract for a client that
a) doesn’t understand their own business needs
b) doesn’t understand their own financing issues
c) ignores giant gaps in their proposed budget vs actual operating expenses
d) assumes they can continue to operate at a normal level with 50% of the staff
e) informs employees of decisions that cripple their ability to earn a living at the last possible second.
You might disagree with letter e) and say that they did give 2 weeks or therabout. I’ll offer the probability that those in charge of budgeting saw this coming months ago and chose to do nothing or as little as possible to prevent it.
Gotta love that.

Well I suppose the key points to remember when speaking of layoffs and the like:
1) Everything always happens for a reason, whether or not that reason is known to you.
2) Just as one door closes, another is already opening up for you.
Stay positive.

Glad you got there safely. I’m guessing turn down service and a chocoalate on your pillow won’t be happening?
