Blogging Addiction
La Shawn is asking some questions about blogging. Here’s my answers…
How long have you been blogging?
Steadily? I’ve been blogging on this blog since May 20 of 2004. Almost my one year anniversary. ;) 125 shopping days left. ;) But before that, I began that hulk of a blog, Ensight with Jeremy. I like to claim that because it might get me Google ranking or something. ;) We began there on June 4, 2003 and since his upgrade from MT to Wordpress, all my entries are now credited to him. Do you really think Jeremy would write about this? Hrmph. ;)
Do you believe you’re addicted to blogging? Please explain, and be honest. It is habit-forming, I must confess. (If I decide to use your response, I may have follow-up questions.)
Addicted is such a strong word. I would like to think of it more as an unusual persuasion to sit and type in Wordpress. I don’t know what it is about Wordpress. I guess the grey-based admin control panel is just so soothing.
But in all seriousness, I don’t think it’s an addiction, although the symptoms are similar. Addictions are ” Habitual psychological and physiological dependence on a substance or practice beyond one’s voluntary control”, according to Dictionary.com. When one blogs, and blogs alot, it is not generally a psychosis or psychological dependance to do so. We do it ’cause we like it. Sean calls it therapeutic. I do it because I want to make a difference and there’s a thirst for influence, I believe, in any human being. Addiction implies lack of control. Driven would be the word I would use, because I am driven to speak my mind clearly and concisely and hopefully attract “followers”
Have you ever taken a hiatus? If so, for what reason and how long?
Since beginning with Technosailor, I have taken very short hiatusi (pl?) for a few days and, usually, unintentionally. Work has gotten busy. Home has gotten busy. Whatever. I took a 8 month hiatus between my leaving Ensight and beginning Technosailor. I was involved in other projects in web development and I just didn’t feel like blogging.
Have you ever thought of giving up your blog? Why or why not?
In years past, I have had many ventures started that failed. Lots of good ideas, but nothing that really has taken off. With Technosailor, I am experiencing a level of “success” (success is such a loose and abstract concept in the blogosphere) that I have not had with other ventures. So in that sense, no I have not thought about giving it up. Sometimes on Mondays I don’t feel like blogging anymore. Maybe then I feel like giving it up. ;)
