This will be controversial, I hope it sparks some comments. I don’t intend to censor (nor do I ever censor as a general rule), but I will censor personal attacks.
Fire Wolf says something that rings true but is so politically incorrect that many people wouldn’t dare say it. Well, I’m not exactly known to be politcally correct, but I’m not a racist either.
To put it bluntly, I’m glad this is a three day weekend. Anytime I can get a three day weekend is good. Martin Luther King was a great man that did awesome things for civil rights in America and he has left a lasting impression, if in no other way that every city in America has a street named after him. Him and Lafayette, whoever he is.
But as Fire Wolf says…
Martin Luther King jr. was a great man. He did many things to raise the awareness of an entire race. His movement sparked controversy, but to some degree, enlightenment. His violent and horrible death however, stopped the forward progress of civil rights for black americans. Yes they have equal rights, yes they have dominated our sports with their athletic prowess, they have access to all that our military has to offer now, they have the largest successful music genre to date, they have some of the best known movie actors and actresses. That alone should be celebrated, and jeered. However, this is not my holiday.
MLK Day to me, has been PC’d to death. Forgive the pun. But, why is it that this day, everyone takes off work, but presidents day? Only some government offices close. Why is it, this is a HUGE day, and Pearl Harbor day just gets a mention in the newspapers and a “Note of Interest”? Why is it, 9/11 has no holiday? For me, and this is my personal opinion, National Holidays should have a national interest. Not a racial interest, not a political office’s interest but a nationwide interest.
I’m curious to know why more people don’t get Veteran’s Day off. I mean, they can use the time to go and catch the sales that all the stores run, right? And to think, American soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen have bled the ground and sea red in places like Normandy, Leyte Gulf, Gettysburg and even Fallujah. So tell me… is it more important to get MLK’s birthday off as a nation, or is it important to honor the Vets?
Of course the answer is both. They don’t have to be mutually exclusive. But do you see the imbalance as Fire Wolf and I do?

My opinion of MLK day is very similar to yours. I agree that MLK was a great man, BUT there are many men and women who were great in their own way, but are not celebrated… We no longer have a President George Washington or Abraham Lincoln holiday. They were both great men and led our country during very violent times. We now have Presidents Day. MLK day should be called Freedom or Liberty day and honor the achievement of the civil rights movement. We have a MLK day to honor him, but I think a national holiday was created for other reasons… Lets see how much controversy there is when a Ronald Reagan national holiday is proposed… Can you name any other national holidays that honor an individual by name?

Get rid of the MLK holiday and bring back Washington’s birthday and Lincoln’s birthday as separate Federal paid holiday’s. They founded and brought much good to this country. MLK divided it. If it weren’t for Licoln, those savages would be picking cotton today instead of rapping, appearing on Jerry Springer, and celebrating that no-good black, racist communist’s birthday.

I’m getting all this too, except it sends it to false email address. I don’t have “billing@chrisjs.com†“webmaster@chrisjs.com†“help@chrisjs.com†or any other emails like that. Problem is, is that it goes to my catch-all address, the one I use as my “personal†address
