Dell and Symantec Ghost

If that title doesn’t get me hits from the search engines, I don’t know what will. ;)

Here’s the situation. We have a batch of Dell Latitude C840 laptops that do not like Ghost 7.5 or 8. Awaiting the arrival of 9 at this point. They recognize 6.5 no problem but because we want to create an XP image, we are forced to use 7+. When launching Ghost, though, the system just hangs with a black screen.

We have a custom boot disk that maps a network drive where the images are stored and launches Ghost from that network drive. This process, although not perfect (using multicast would be perfect but unachievable at the moment), has worked for several years using a standard Windows 2000 deployment. We have also used Ghost 6.5 for this process.

Utilizing the same boot disks on other systems (non-Dell) has yielded positive results. This is the only Dell model we have in our arsenal so I am unable to see if it is a “Dell” issue or if it is a “C840″ issue.

Can anyone offer suggestion, by way of comments or email, as to how to get Ghost 7.5+ to run on a Dell C840.

No, of COURSE I don’t know. The only ghost I know around these here parts is that of Edgar A. Poe. I just wanted to say hey!

Good luck. I came across your site looking for a reliable driver for the messed up 3com el556 that come in these things. Ghost and Dell do not go well (hey, that rymes!)

Have you verified that you’re running the very latest available BIOS? We had one machine at work that would not work with Ghost 9 untile we updated the BIOS.

I’m now struggling with Ghost 9 and a Dell 8400. The backup never gets past “initializing.” I’ve updated the BIOS on this machine to no avail. Of course, there’s no mention of any such problem in the Symantec knowledgebase, and their “support” site is set up so that you have no way to communicate with them at all, unless you pay a $30 fee for the privilege. Having already paid about $70 for the software, I do not want to throw good money after bad just to tell them it doesn’t work. You may be in the same situation. I hope not.

Hey Mel,

I’m not working there anymore but if my memory serves me, we even flashed the BIOS on our set of test boxes. No avail.

Welcome, BTW!

Symantec provide free on-line technical support for Ghost 8.x:

http://servicenews.symantec.com/cgi-bin/browse.cgi?group=symantec.support.network.ghost8.general&product=symghost&mini_version=symghost_8&tpre=ep

They advise:

“* A technician’s response to your question will normally be posted to the discussion group and emailed to you by the end of the next business day. Occasionally we receive a very large number of messages, and your response may take a little longer.”

And also:

“If Ghost generates an error, please post the GHOSTERR.TXT file in the message that you write. It contains valuable information about what is happening when Ghost has a problem. This will go far in helping us solve the problem you are having.”

If you have a new PC with the new Serial ATA drives, and you want to image the HD, use the newest version of Ghost7.5, and use the switch -FNI (ghost.exe -FNI), otherwise ghost will fail claiming “stack overflow” “”emm386 errors” “blank screen” (which actually have nothing to do with it).

This is actually a very old post and I’m not at that site anymore… But for informational purposes, there was no error reported. Simply a blank screen. Are we referring to the same error?

SPS Tech’s solution solved the problem for me.
You may sometimes not recieve an error message at all.
Ghost has dramas trying to create the mini partition on a SATA drive unless you use this switch.

Thanks!!

I too am having problem with Norton 9 when backing up to a network image. It sits there “initializing” forever. Have had no luck finding why or any documented incidents or fixes. Very disappointing.

Cheers. :-

Correction to above posting. Norton 9 should read Ghost 9.0.

Sorry.
