44

It has been rumored that President Bush has taken to calling Secretary of State Condi Rice, “44″, a reference to the next President of the United States.

I was reading through a conservative website today where the talk was of a possible 2008 campaign of Condoleeza Rice with a possible running mate in Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney. My opinions on Condi as a candidate has been well publicized.

But I don’t want to push any line of thought as much as collect opinions, because this could be a big issue in the next few years.

The biggest problem Condi faces is that the red state base that awarded George W. Bush the presidency, may not support a black woman for President. Condi has all the academic experience in the world. She is a scholar on Soviet-Russo policy. She has served faithfully as National Security Advisor during some of the most trying times in our nations history. And all evidence points to the fact that she will be an excellent Secretary of State. But even with an exceptional resume, it is not clear whether an African American could carry the south.

You also have to take into account the thoughts of this commenter:

Condi for president has a huge boat anchor to lug around. George Bush. I don’t even know if she’d carry a majority black vote. People will see her as Black W out to steal yet another election. Not that many of the lunatic left would switch over, but I believe many right in the center wouldn’t vote for her.

Those same people that held their nose and voted Bush because Kerry was such a putz would hold their nose and vote Hillary JUST for the Change.

Also, it is commonly accepted that the best qualifying experience a would-be President would have is as Governor of a state. Dr. Rice has never held a publically elected office and it is unclear if she could survive the political gruel. Which brings us to a possible running mate.

Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney has alot of capital with the conservative base. He was the man at the center of the opposition of the Massachusetts Supreme Court decision to legalize gay marriage. This could actually win alot of the black vote, to a degree, where the constituency tends to hold a culturally conservative outlook on family values. However, he is hurt again in the south, an area of the country that is fixin’ to be a swing zone. He is a mormon, a fact that is sure to lose him points in the Bible belt where most voters claim to be Southern Baptist.

I would not only vote for Condi (or Mitt), I would actively work on their behalf. But this isn’t about me. What are your thoughts?

I think Mitt would make a better candidate for president than Condi, for a lot of the same reasons you’ve outlined: He’s not a woman, he’s more in line with red state values, and he has previous experience actually running government offices. Now don’t think I’m sexist or anything; I’d love to see a woman in the white house, but I don’t necessarily see it happening on the Republican side first. And if he can win one of the bluest states in the nation as a Republican, he can probably fare better than lots of other proposed candidates.
