Wireless Network

About 6 months ago, I purchased a Linksys Wireless-G router for my home. I had a laptop from work and didn’t want to have to stay within 10 feet of my internet connection… or so…. The combo pack I bought included a Linksys 802.11g wireless PCMCIA NIC card as well. Perfect combo.

It took awhile to get the thing right. It was the first time I had played with wireless and it was sort of a learning experience. I managed to create a secure Wireless Access Point and somehow got the NIC to lock into it, and it was secured via WEP/64.

About two months ago, I began my new job and recieved a laptop again. Plugging in my wireless card, I had to re-establish the wireless communication. It didn’t seem to like the settings I had before and trying to keep a smooth dance between Windows wireless management and Linksys wireless management was a good trick indeed. This time, I got the router and card communicating with WPA-Private Shared Key. Again, it took awhile but life was good with the world.

About a week ago, my wife and I decided that as our son starts getting into things more (and has taken a keen like to the computer), it’s a good idea to move the PC to another room. Since it’s an apartment, rerouting cabling in the walls is not exaclty an option so I went out to eBay and bought a wireless Netgear WG311 PCI card. It arrived tonight.

And I have spent the past 4 hours (minus bathroom, dinner and Alias time) configuring the thing. WEP didn’t seem to work. WPA-PSK/TKIP didn’t work either. It would connect and then disconnect, then reconnect, then disconnect. I finally managed to make Netgear manage the connection. Ultimately, I generated a new WEP/64 key in the router and used it exactly in the Netgear card interface. Very simple. But the simplest thing stumped me for four hours.

See, we have a ton in common. I too have to have my Alias fix (Oh if I could date Jennifer Garner). As for your wireless nightmare, I live in a house where I can drill through the walls and ceilings, so, I have a nice wired network. :) I don’t plan on going wireless until I get a laptop. That won’t be any time soon :( (My dreams of a powerbook will have to get shelved) Anyway, good luck! Murphy and his dumb laws often play havoc to us IT guys.

I think Jennifer Garner would break you in half… unless you’re into that sort of thing. ;)
