I’m all for being comfortable, but does anyone else find the idea of the The Northwest University Women’s Lacrosse team wearing flip-flops to a Presidential meet-and-greet at least mildly disturbing and disresepectful?

This seems to be another case of generation gap. Flip-flops really are on the rise in terms of popular fashion. Like the article said, it’s not uncommon for flip-flops to cost several hundred dollars by top designers. The girls also said they weren’t wearing cheap beach flip flops either.
Besides, why should a young womens lacrosse team be expected to wear fancy high-heels anyway? They are more formal, they are classy, and this is the White House. OK. But this is July in DC and these are college sports girls. I don’t blame them for going comfortable to meet the President.

For the same reason that the National Champion football teamwears shirts and ties to the White House…

The problem is that young people today have no regard for proper etiquette… Grub is in… How can a young woman put a nice dress or skirt on then throw on a pair of Flip Flops? Those are for the beach, or Phillipines… These young people just don’t care… For God’s sake they were going to the White House to meet the President… What did their parents teach them? Whether a pair of Flip Flops cost two cents or $150 dollars they are still a pair of FLIP FLOPS… Nobody said they needed to wear high-heels, but a decent pair of shoes… I’m surprise there weren’t any tank tops or thongs… Good Lord…

Mike, noone would have noticed thongs…. well, perhaps they would, but you know what I mean.

They showed pics of the flip flops on Countdown with Keith Olberman…They honestly didn’t look that bad.
I do think it’s informal, but not nearly as bad as it’s being made out to be.
Mike 07.19.05 at 10:16 pm
No… It looks bad… If you’re being Politically Correct maybe it looks OK, BUT truthfully it is very tacky… The Whitehouse, The President and FLIP FLOPS??? Gimme a break…

I don’t have a problem with flip flops. I think some flip flops look great. But there’s an etiquette and protocol. You wouldn’t show up at a wedding in a tee shirt would you?
One thing I can say is that the flap is being caused more by media than by the White House. The White House hasn’t said anything publically about it so I’m not sure how they took it.

KOOKY??? You can’t see the dents in my head…
It’s always the MEDIA…

u know… i actually agree with Mike *SHOCKER* - it is really inappropriate to wear flip-flops to meet the president. there is a certain ettiquette for certain situations - i went barefoot to a wedding in Denver but it was in the bride’s garden and she was barefoot - so that’s ok - wearing a t-shirt to a wedding if it’s a really casual wedding is ok - i think you should reflect what the host looks like - if he is formal, then you should be as well… this is the most powerful man in the free world (like him or not) and the proper respect should be shown.

Well, it’as not even the man but the office. The office demands respect. When an enlisted man or woman of any service encounters an officer in any other service, foreign or domestic, there’s a proper etiquette which includes a salute. They don’t salute the man. They salute the rank. Same with the President.

true aaron - and even when the military go to the white house they wear their dress uniforms - only the best to show pride. i personally don’t like dubya but i’m so proud of being an american that i would show him the utmost respect as he is the leader of our country. maybe that’s the point the girls are missing… and it’s not only the flip-flops, some of their outfits were inappropriate at well - i know it’s summer but you don’t wear a mini-skirt to the white house!

What’s amazing is that this actually made news… The girls are all young, they probably didn’t think twice about it. But I don’t that reflects our culture in a negative way.
