Smoke and Even Moreso Mirrors

A site that bills itself as a political commentary site, among other things, cannot slip through “the day after” without some kind of commentary on the new Supreme Court nominee.

Quite honestly, I don’t know much about the guy. I’ll leave the record analysis to the professionals, or those that think of themselves as professionals. I do know he is from Buffalo, NY. As a native son of Buffalo, I can say that scores points in my book. It might be just fractions and not integers, but they are still points. Every point counts. Just ask Florida.

But as a native of the Mistake on the Lake, I would say that your “conservative” is probably not all that conservative. Conservatives of New York State are somewhat akin to 150 lb Linebackers. They may claim the title, but they hardly look the part.

Secondly, the last major nomination that left it’s indelible mark on my subconscience was that of Justice Clarence Thomas in 1991. So the hub bub that is created (mostly by the media) over conservative and liberal seems a little much to me. I don’t care if you are the most liberal nominee available. I don’t care if you are the most conservative. The “litmus test” is not Roe v. Wade and it’s not Emminent Domain. The litmus test is whether a nominee believes in a “living Constitution” or not. If they believe in a “living Constitution” they are not fit for the bench. If you’re a liberal but will interpret law rather than institutionalize new law, then you’re okay in my book. If you’re a black man that believes in affirmative action, but realizes that the Constitution provides for “equal opportunity” for all Americans and not just some based on skin color, then that’s okay.

I don’t know much about Roberts. I thought that his name being leaked an hour before being announced, was an intentional ploy by the White House to find the source of leaks, but apparently Roberts really was the nominee.

Im sure Bush is working real hard to find the source of leaks. But that aside…

My perspective is this: I dont know much about Roberts either. But not many people do. Extreme conservative groups are not thrilled and neither are extreme liberal groups. Bush may have actually done something right for once. We all knew it was going to be a conservative. As a liberal I think the choice could’ve been a lot worse. This guy has litigated many times in front of the hight court, he seems like a decent person, and he’s only 50.

All the Roe v. Wade talk is irritating…Liberals need to calm down, and conservatives need to stop salvating to get it overturned. I think it’s unlikely anything is going to change anytime soon.

Assuming Roberts will be confirmed, it’s a matter of ‘wait and see’…They say the Supreme Court can change a judge. He could move far right, or go the way of Justice Souter after Bush Sr. appointed him.

I think that’s one of the most level-headed things that can be said, AJ.

I’ll have to totally agree with Aaron on what the litmus test should be, but we all know Robert’s will be drilled by the Liberals… Fortunately, they don’t have much on him to slander his name as they did Clarence Thomas. Hopefully with the nomination of Roberts we can start to turn the Supreme Courts course away from legislating from the bench, as they’ve done in recent years.

Bush will have at least one more nomination when Rehnquist retires, or dies and then hopefully Kennedy will leave one way or another and he can have another chance to beef up the court with justices who will interpret the Constitution in a Constructionist view instead of basing their interpretation on the which way the wind is blowing…

I also agree we will not see anything changed pertaining to Roe vs. Wade… In my eyes this is not an abortion issue, but a woman’s rights issue. I personally don’t want to see the decision reversed. I am against abortion, unless rape or incest has occurred

The Queen City….. Pshaww… :) Been down on William Street in the Lovejoy section lately? ;)

Been down on McKinley Avenue lately? You call it a mistake for what reason? There have been many more improvements to the city in the past 20 or so years that outweigh what you’ll find in the bad areas. How about all the improvements to the lake front?

Just how long did you live there?

  8. Aaron Brazell 21 July 2005 at 9:33 am #

Honestly, it’s been awhile. Buffalo is not on my list of places to visit. :)

But that said, I lived there for 8 years of my childhood.

What part of the city did you live in? I grew up in what’s called South Buffalo… I still have lots of relatives living there… My grandfather retired after 30 years at Bethlehem and both my father and uncle retired from the Chevy and Ford plants after 25 years…

Buffalo is a hard town to figure when you try to nail down being Liberal of Conservative. They voted heavily for Hillary, which I chewed them out on. The older folks are pretty much Liberals, which is pretty normal, because the MSM is always scaring them on one issue or another. People my age tend to lean more Conservative and well the younger growd is still lost over on the Left… They just don’t know any better, as is the same with the older folks…

I wouldn’t necessarily describe Hillary as liberal either. Her stance on video games/violence/etc. reads straight out of the socially conservative playbook.

Vinne, Vinnie, Vinnie… Did you actually say “I wouldn’t necessarily describe Hillary as Liberal either”???? She may squawk like a duck, and walk like a duck, but she is pure, unadulterated Liberal… Her recent comments are her attempt to make the American people think she supports those types of issues… Is she pro military? Hell no… But why is she calling for increasing the size of our military? Makes her look like she supports the troops… Please don’t lose grasp of what this snake truly is…

Mike’s got a point. I was going to say the same thing without all the additional rhetoric, but Hillary is not a conservative. She’s a liberal running for President. She needs to hold the middle to stand a chance.
