Odds and Ends

Excuse my absence. I have an excuse but no one wants to hear my lame excuses. So here’s a run down on a few items of interest.

  • I had a hard drive failure yesterday. My 3 year old 40GB hard drive finally bit the big one. No warning or anything so I lost alot of data. It was a Maxtor. Ironically, I’ve had a 15GB Western Digital for 6 years and it is still ticking. In fact, that’s where alot of my data was so I didn’t lose everything. :) I bought a 120GB internal drive for $100 so that wasn’t a bad deal, though I really, really wanted the 300GB that they had on sale for $200 at Best Buy. Just trying to save some money. I’ve gotten really good at handling hard drive failures and setting up systems again subsequently. I nailed the whole thing in about 2.5 hours including the OS, patches and all the software and drivers I use. Nice!
  • There’s a rumor floating around that an AFL-CIO labor union is protesting the use of non-union labor to make repairs on Space Shuttle Discovery and NASA’s inclination to ship jobs not just overseas, but to outer space. Hmmm. ;)
  • Orioles Suck.

Overheard at a bus stop on the north side of Chicago near Wrigley Field:

“Where are we going and why are we in this handbasket?”
