Friday Poll: Should Black Democrats Resign?

by Aaron Brazell on November 4, 2005 · 9 comments

There’s plenty of juicy fodder about this Maryland black democrats story that I posted a few days ago. Kweisi Mfume distancing himself. The Maryland Democratic party issuing statements. Salima Marriott digging herself a whole. Ben Cardin half-denouncing it. It’s great stuff.

So the Friday poll this week is: “Do you think black Democrats in Maryland should be forced to resign over comments made about the validity of race-based attacks on fellow black man and Republican Senate candidate Michael Steele?”

Cast your votes now.

Polotics is a very dirty game (see Kilgore vs. Kaine ads) so really it doesn’t matter. It’s the norm for a politician to make a statement that mainstream america is shocked or upset by.

Unless a person chooses to resign the only way to get them out is to NOT vote for them.

I agree with you, Sean, but Trent Lott was forced to resign for something that was an unintentional, if unfortunate, faux pas that was interpreted as racially insensitive. But it’s okay for Democrats to make those kinds of statements, much more intentionally, and keep their positions. It’s a double standard.

Sorry, Trent’s comment was way over the line, so it is completely understandable as to why he had to give up his position.

As a Democrat, not necessarily a leftist, I’m ashamed at the actions with some of the black Democrats who currently hold office. Much like with Trent Lott, if we are going to uphold the same standards of our elected officials across the line, the Democrats need to take some cupibility for what they have done recently with Mr. Steele.
