As I’ve read through the conservative side of my RSS feeds today, I’ve come across the same orgyfest over one bit of news. It’s, quite frankly, alarming because it’s an “unknown”.
The news is about “Pajama”:http://www.outsidethebeltway.com/archives/12686 “Media”:http://sayanythingblog.com/2005/11/15/pajamas-media-open-source-media-gets-write-up-from-ap/, now “Open”:http://www.swankyconservative.com/2005/11/16/open-source-media-launch/ “Source”:http://mypetjawa.mu.nu/archives/133800.php “Media”:http://littlegreenfootballs.com/weblog/?entry=18259_OSM_Launch_Open_Thread#comments.
The OSM is apparently a new-media-meets-old-media lovefest that has all the conservative bloggers hyperventilating in anticipation. I don’t get it. Why not wait to see what kind of tenure OSM actually has before cumming in your pants, guys?
To me it simply seems as a conservative blog network. All A-listers. Why do A-listers need a blog network? And what good is a bunch of _conservative_ A-listers going to do in one network? Preach a little more to the choir?
OSM has been around for not even 24 hours and I’m tired of them already. A shame too. It’s a nice site.

Time to start trimming your RSS feeds?
Whenever I find a bunch of bloggers circlejerking around the same story too much (and without any unique insight) I cut all of them off except for the one or two who tend to get to the story first.

On your preaching to the choir comment, I notice that’s much more common among conservative blogs…For example, I did a little experiment on FreeRepublic.com… I heard that they will ban you as soon as they notice that you are not 100% lockstep with their ideas…
I signed up, and responded to a few posts. Because I was aware of what FreeRepublic is about, I made sure I didn’t give myself away as a liberal…But I asked questions, and tried to open up a bit of debate on a few topics. My priveledge to post was revoked the following day.
I then signed up a second time and I was discovered within an hour of being a troll because I signed up from the same system. I signed up from a seperate system, and my tenure lasted about two days that time.
I was shocked…First of all, it says on their disclaimer that they welcome debate as long as it’s civil. They also say they believe in free speech as long as it’s not profane. They also comment that they are a “family†site….Fair enough, but I was shocked how quickly they barred me for not conforming to their every viewpoint. Plus, I noticed people there who used very profane language and posted sick pictures…But because they bash liberals, they get to stick around.
I suggest anyone to sign up at FreeRepublic.com and put “Bush†and “wrong†in the same sentence…Time how fast you are booted!

lol @ A.J.
I had the same “type” of experience at FR when I decided to take a decidedly independent stance.
But the same can be said of the Democratic Underground where I had the same experience.

I thought Free Republic was a parody site for the longest time.
I wish I was right :(

Well, for one thing we “A-list” conservative bloggers (I’m A-list? Who’d a thunk it) are banding together to leverage advertising dollars. Not such a bad idea in my mind. I’m still up in the air about the portal thing, but we’ll see.
And liberal blogs were certainly free to join. It just so happens that this thing was started by right-leaning people, so right-leaning blogs tend to be members.
As for conservative bloggers “cumming in their pants” about this venture, I hardly think that is true. Several member blogs have questioned the point of the venture’s portal aspect, and several more non-member conservative bloggers have been down-right nasty in their criticism of the project (Ann Althouse referred to the project as ejaculate, I’m not kidding).
As for conservative blogs preaching to the choir, I know my blog certainly isn’t like that. In fact, I’d say that I have more liberal readers/commenters than conservative. My comments section is noting but one protracted left/right debate.
But hey, that’s just my two cents. And I’m a dumb right-winger, what do I know?

Rob, I appreciate your candidness. Half of me is tempted to go through my RSS reader and post every single link referenceing Pajama/OSM/whatever the hell they call themselves.
Half of me wants to quote writer after writer after writer demonstrating my point.
The other half of me says that it’s just encouraging this nonsense to do so. I’m far from a liberal. I’m musch closer to a conservative. However this self-aggrandizement (on both sides) has got to stop. It’s grating. I really think most Americans get tired of hearing the left and the right toot their own horn about as they continue on their merry way of demeaning the other side. It’s a life’s work to make sure the Dems are wrong or visa versa on the Republican side. Don’t you think this politics for the sake of politics is stupid? I do!
And frankly, Pajama Orgy is exactly that… more partisan hacks talking about things that divide the country even more while the rest stand back and polarize themselves away.
I don’t know what you think Pajama Media is going to do for you. I’d be distancing myself personally.

Well, I guess I’m not seeing much in the way of self aggrandizement. Banding together to leverage advertising dollars? Sure. Trying out a new way to collect opinions on breaking stories? Yeah. Orgies? Literally, I wish. Figuratively, hardly.
But whatever. To each their own.
One thing though: If you look at the Pajamas site you’ll note that a lot of the blogs that have been linked on stories (and I’m talking 50% or more) aren’t even members of the project. That sort of flies in the face of your conclusions.
And as for me distancing myself, I’m just in it for the money. If they don’t boost what I’m making after this first contract term, I’ll probably cut myself loose as I’m pretty sure I’d be making more on my own.
But we’ll see. Thought it wouldn’t hurt to give this one a shot.
