I hate to sound like I’m begging, but I am. Yea, I know, it doesn’t become me. But I really need some side work badly. Since my wife and I split, I have found myself with a large amount of debt that is impossible to pay off with my Northrop Grumman salary. They have me cheap, to be honest, and hopefully that will change with annual raises next year, but for the time being it’s either do what I love or do what I need to do.
If I do what I love, I continue to take freelance work where it comes. I could use a bunch of smallish jobs ($150-$500) or one really lucrative big job with a client I can continue to work with for some time. I can do what I’ve been doing lately - WordPress migrations, plugins, and other development. Or I can take freelance Linux systems administration jobs. Or consulting. Anything really if I’m doing what I love.
If I do what I have to, then I go and find a second job somewhere to supplement my income. My blogging will drop. My free time will drop. I’ll become irritable and always exhausted. I don’t want this option at all.
So help a guy out and keep me in mind when your next project comes around or suggest me to someone else as a possible solution to their problem. Like I said - I hate to beg, but desperate times call for desperate measures.
Anyways…

You should sign up for the DC Sage and the Baltimore SAGE groups.
http://www.dc-sage.org
http://www.oldbaysage.org
They are the DC area Systems Administrator’s Guild chapters, and each have mailing lists of moderate to low traffic. There is a continual stream of jobs that come through the lists posted by people “with a clue” ™.
Also, as much as I know you hate it, you might have to work a regular in addition to or (the horro) in place of Northup.
It’s a worker’s market right now, Aaron. Go get you some.

By the way, the info you sent me for my account here doesn’t work, and the stuff Wordpress sends me doesn’t work either.
Gimme a shout offline, and let’s see if we can fix that. I’ve got a post brewing…

As they said about the Old Bay SAGE lists, here’s what I posted there just last week. My position is opening up, I’m relocating to Chicago. It’s a puffy job, lots of vacation, great benefits, low stress, no pager (at least not right now) .. may need a college degree but I’m trying to convince them that it’s not necessary.
It should be posted soon to http://www.umbc.edu/hr/jobs
Here’s what I wrote about it:
To: Old Bay SAGE - Baltimore MD Systems Administrators
Subject: UMBC Center for Health Program Development and Management is looking for a Solaris admin
Actually, my job is opening up - my last day here is December 23. 4 year
college degree required, that’s the only catch. The boss is pretty
excellent, the benefits are really good, you get gobs of vacation time,
rigorously stable job position and working for a good cause, too. I do not
carry a pager and the pay rate is competitive. The job isn’t posted yet so
if you get your resume in order now you can be the first in the door.
(I’m moving to chicago! Whee!)

Meh, I meant http://www.umbc.edu/hr/employment/index.html
Anyway, there’s an “Information Technology Specialist” job on there now, I don’t know anything about that one but that may also interest you.

What “thing” is that? I haven’t gotten any offers or indication of consideration from the Weather Channel to say yes or no to. :-)
