Had a L’il Mishap

Posted by: Aaron Brazell

I just made a boo-boo. I was valiantly trying to cleanup my plugins folder in WordPress and issued the deadly:

-bash-2.05b$ rm del2wp *

What I meant to do was run rm del2wp* but alas, I added a space thus deleting ALL of my plugins and not just all the plugins beginning with del2wp…. Sigh.

I’ll let you in on a little secret that I’m ashamed of. I don’t have a good backup plan. If anyone is willing to donate some (ok, quite a bit) of server space in the neighborhood of, oh, about 3 GB of hard drive space I would love you forever and always. The reason why I haven’t taken backups seriously is… well, 1) laziness and 2) I always anticipated needing backups in case of a hard drive failure, etc. What good would a backup on the same drive as my site is on? I could download it to my hard drive but I point at #1 as to why I haven’t done that.

Needless to say, I got most of the plugins back by downloading from the original site. The problem is that I had hacked alot of them (including the recent comment list on the right) and I can’t remember all the changes I made so I’ll have to trial and error it for awhile and fix things as I find them. If you see anything odd, PLEASE let me know.

I also am going to work out a better backup plan so again, if you have some server space that I can do automatic remote backups to, let me know. I will need shell access. I don’t “do” FTP for security reasons. Email me at aaron [at] technosailor [dot] com…

I’ll make you a deal: you can use the b5 backup server if you help us a bit with getting our backups happening too. The backup server has about 40GB of space on it (from memory), which should be enough for your needs and ours for the foreseeable future…

    Aaron,

I have remote backup attached to the server you could use… I told you that weeks ago, and you said “not till I clean up all my crap”

I guess you just cleaned up :P

Haha Eric. You’ll have to send me details on this. It wouldn’t hurt to keep backups in two separate places.

Just shoot me an email or catch me on AIM. It’s just a matter of you adding the backup settings.

How about just backing up onto a DVD-R? Works well for me, and allows you to keep an off-site copy, too!

    Twitter Pitch!

Twitter pitching is a form of pitch that requires succint "what does this mean for me" kind of pitching. It is the ultimate efficiency of words. You have 140 characters or less to tell me why your pitch matters to me or my readers. Please include a means of contacting you. This is included in your 140 characters. If you send successive pitches, you will likely be ignored, unless it's obvious that the first pitch was a case of "accidental send", etc.

This form of pitching does not mean I'm being a diva. It means that my time is valuable, and you want a piece of it. It's good practice for you, and delivers your pitch in a format I want. Win-win.
