Web Design or Not?
Recently, it was brought to my attention that I did not have a portfolio page here at Emmense. While this is true (and it was certainly brought to my attention by Stacie while I was working on this site back in early January), it was an intentional omission.
You see, we are about the whole package when it comes to helping a company or individual become successful in their venture. Historically, we have been a “website” company but the truth is, a website can be well-made but still be a waste of money. We could easily market ourselves as website specialists. What do you want? Flash? Logos? Graphics?
There’s nothing wrong with these things. I know some excellent designers that I would love to refer you to. Dan Bender is out of Lancaster, New York and if you represent a company needing print layout and design, he might want to talk to you.
And, in fact, we have 5 years of experience in putting people on the web. However, web glitz lasts only a few seconds in a figurative sense. How does that website work for you? If you represent a church, can you say that your congregation has grown because of your website? If you are a small business, has your website brought you more business? Or have you burned a few thousand dollars?
We have intentionally omitted a portfolio because the “stuff” that matters to the success of web technologies is intangible and can’t be displayed in a portfolio. Instead, we opt for this blog. In this blog, we demonstrate the expertise that makes what we do so valuable. And you benefit too. Information is a currency that is valuable on both sides of the coin.
Take for example the ongoing series, Anatomy of a Website. Not only do articles such as these help us grow the business of I.T. and web consulting, but it also gives you useful tools of the trade.
Maybe if the stars line up properly, you’ll save yourself some money and be able to do what we do for nothing. And if not, we’ll be here to back you up!
Who knows, maybe We’ll want your portfolio in a few years.
