b5media: Taking a Hit

A few of you have emailed me commenting on my distantness lately. Let me explain. I’ve been working on getting a server prepped for b5media. As they continue to grow with leaps and bounds, they were quickly outgrowing their one server.

The point was underscored in the past 72 hours as a lucky blogger got lots of traffic to her blog, but to the detriment of everyone else on the server. You’ll see from this graph graph_hourly_site-trend_range.php.png(courtesy of grabPERF) just how hammered we were. I spent 6 hours on Monday night just trying to keep the main server above water. As you see from the graphs, we survived.

Not only did we survive that hit, I have now flipped the switches on the six biggest blogs, The Microsoft Weblog, the Windows Vista Blog, The Gadget Blog, the Blog Herald, Play-Girlz and Search Engine Herald, and they are serving from the new server. That should serve as a pressure valve and make things easier to deal with.

Pick up your copy of the WordPress Bible, a wildly popular resource for beginners and experts alike.

[...] I’ve been intimately involved in the server issues over at b5media.  Lot’s of issues. Very technical.  Needless to say enough is enough.  The 6 blogs that are being moved over to the new server are the biggest of the big, generate the most revenue and is losing a huge amount of revenue a day.
