Using Keywords

Open Mic Friday Guest Joe:

I have recently found that keywords may not be the only place to concentrate your efforts.

Although I do get the majority of my hits and pageviews from people using variations of Working at Home, which is my target audience, I have seen so many different words used to find my pages I was astounded.

I do use Blogger. I have each post published on it’s own, as well as the whole Blog. The interesting thing is that even though I have keywords all relating to the theme of the Blog, people seem to find me using terms contained in different posts.

For instance, I once wrote a post as a result of problems I was having installing my DSL equipment. In it I mentioned the products I used and how I finally succeeded in the installation. Some people Googled the name of that particular wireless modem and ended up reading what I had written. Another example is after posting on my experience with a particular affiliate association, my E-mail box was filled with readers own experiences. There are many more examples, but they only relate to my situation, so would be boring to most of you.

I do think that Keywords are important as a way to target the audience you want, but you may be supprised by the amount of pageviews you get because of the content you write.

So true, so true…I personally spend absolutely zero effort in picking keywords, etc, and try to just write good content.

It really is amazing how some people will find their way to your site, though…I’ve seen search phrases in my stats that literally had me rolling on the floor :)

    Hey Cary,

Isn’t amazing how many people seem to forget about what they are writing and concentrate on selling themselves?

You can’t discount good keyword usage, though. I know someone who writes titles like “I don’t think so” and then will write an entry which wanders and meanders and you can’t find a point for. Perhaps “targetted writing” would be a better concept. If you’ve got multiple things to talk about, write multiple entries and keep subjects appropriate for the topic. Not going overboard with keyword analysis but a simple matter of focusing.
