Krispy Kreme woes…

Photo by Lutie Wilgren Krispy Kreme will close Monday, Feb. 20 after being open only a couple of years in its location in Waite Park. There are 35 employees. Troy Martin, general manager, said he does not know what the employees’ plans are after the closing, but he plans to stay with the company and work in the wholesale department. Krispy Kreme is also closing its Bloomington and Rochester locations on Monday.
Here in Minnesota, nothing wows the public like a new restaurant opening. I can recall very vividly when the Maple Grove Krispy Kreme opened. (For those of you who don’t know where Maple Grove is, think Twin Cities, then if you have a map handy, Maple Grove is located in the NW region, where the 494/694 loop converges with I-94 and heads towards Fargo. Maple Grove sits right on that convergence and has in the past few years experienced an unbelievable boom in businesses, shopping, and of course, food!)
When that Krispy Kreme opened, for weeks, you could not drive past that location, and not witness blocks and blocks of cars waiting in line to fill up on the tasty treats. Now, here in Waite Park (a neighboring city to St. Cloud), Krispy Kreme has decided to shut down for good, and with it they are taking down a Bloomington store (Bloomington = Town with Mall of America), and the Rochester store(South Eastern Minnesota).
I don’t personally like to see stores close, of course I understand the Art of Capitalism War. That being clear, I have to wonder how much of it is due to the Atkins craze. Since that silly diet came out into the open, it seems anything with a carb was declared “evil”. You could literally watch food companies scramble to come up with low or zero carb products that would safeguard or cushion their bottom line. The fact that there are still carb free or low carb products on the market shows you that this diet “theory” is here to stay.
One has to ask themself in light of the pending downfall of Krispy Kreme, whose bright idea was it to focus your entire company on one product and believe that donuts will take you into the future?
I miss Dunkin Donuts, I miss Mister Donuts, and Krispy Kreme is no Dunkin Donuts, but why is it that donut shops never last? Is it that donuts have a viscious cycle of ups and downs? From each year do donuts lose their appeal to your stomach?
Frosted, chocolate, sprinkled, powdered, sugared, one can see that these are unkind tempters to your hunger demon, but I have to feed it every now and again!
In the day of large corporations, I still see one example of mom and pop shops that make a profit, and still continue to provide a public good. Can you guess which one I am talking about?
The Bakery.
Why can a Bakery survive and a donut empire fall?
May I suggest one word: Variety of products.
Buh-bye Krispy Kreme, so nice to know ya.

This is a bummer! I have never been to an actual Krispy Kreme, but I have purchased at Holiday and there are plenty of those around. It was also a bummer when Media Play closed. It was an acceptable alternative to that “nearly impossible to get to” Best Buy. I’m surprised more State students aren’t consuming Krispy Kreme. Must be the trek to the site. Well, we just got a McDonalds (carb central) kids love it, I tolerate it. Maybe KK should open in Wal-Mart.

p.s. Are the ads paying off? I’ve been trying for a bit but the sucess is pitiful.

Heh… ads are not yet paying off. A few cents here, a few cents there. Nothing to quit my job over. :-)
