Let’s do some Bible math

every once in a while I happen to find something in the Bible that I find really interesting. This last Sunday was one of those times.

The sermon was bit dull, so I opened up to the beginning of Genesis and began to read. When I got to chapter five I noticed something interesting:

It gives you how old each person was going down from Adam through Noah when they had their child. It starts out “When Adam had lived 130 years, he had a son in his own likeness, in his own image; and he named him Seth.” It then says “After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 years and had other sons and daughters. 5 Altogether, Adam lived 930 years, and then he died.

We are given this information for each and every link in the chain down from Adam to Noah. I decided to test something: I looked up two things-

1. Was Adam alive when Noah was born?
2. Was Methusela (or anyone else) alive at the time of the flood?

First, the first question:

Adam=930 years
-130 (adam to seth) 800 years left on earth for Adam
-105 (seth to enosh) 695 ”
-90 (enosh to kenan) 605 ”
-70 (kenan to mahalalel) 535 ”
-65 (mahalalel to jared) 470 ”
-162 (jared to enoch) 308 ”
-65 (enoch to methuselah) 243 ”
-187 (methuselah to lamech) 56 ”
-182 (lamech to noah)

uh oh. 126 years short. So no, Adam was not alive when Noah was born.
Neither was Seth. He was 14 years short. Seth’s son was alive, be when he died Noah was only around 100 years old.

Where am I going with this? Question number two.

Was Methusela (or anyone else) alive at the time of the flood?

The short aswer is…yes. Methuselah was. Now let’s take that a step further. Was anyone other than Noah, his sons and their family alive? The answer is…yes.

Methuselah had 969 years on Earth.

When Lamech was born he only had 782
When Noah was born he only had….600
When Noah’s sons where born he had….100

At this point Noah was….500 years old.

Genesis 7:6 reads:

Noah was six hundred years old when the floodwaters came on the earth.

So during the year of the flood Methuselah was exactly… 0 years away from dying. So, either he died in the flood, he died before the flood, or he went on the ark.

1. He went on the ark- no. Genesis 7:13 says “On that very day Noah and his sons, Shem, Ham and Japheth, together with his wife and the wives of his three sons, entered the ark.” Clearly Methuselah was not on the ark.

2. He died before the flood- possible. Genesis 7:11 reads:

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, on the seventeenth day of the second month - on that day all the springs of the great deep burst forth, and the floodgates of the heavens were opened. 12 And rain fell on the earth forty days and forty nights.

So going by probability, what are the chances that he, after living for 869 years, just happened to die a few weeks before the flood? Not all that likely.

3. He died in the flood- probably. Going by pure odds, it would seem more than likely that Methuselah died in the flood.

What does that mean? I don’t know. I guess he was evil. It seems odd that someone who was given such a long life by God even as people were getting less long-lived, ended up dying in one of God’s forms of punishment. Maybe he did die before the flood, but chances are he didn’t.

So what was the point of that post? None. It’s open mike friday, I found it interesting. Maybe someone else also does, maybe someone will have something to add.

I found it interesting! Always do…

But curious, why the NFL banner for this post? Is that a catagory banner and doesn’t really have anything to do with the topic at hand?

Hi Sphagnum. In case you didn’t notice, this post was written by me, Jesse, and not Aaron. I’m one of the people who write guest entries every now and then. He’s been having trouble lately because one of his guests would write something and then people would think it was him. Because of this there is now a gravatar by each post. If it is by Aaron you’ll see his gravatar, a picture of aaron looking smashing in a nice looking suite. If I posted it you’ll see my gravatar, the NFL image you see right now.

In terms of who was alive, and when, it’s very interesting. Genesis is great because there are stories in cultures around the world that say much of the same thing… Personally, I think the Bible is taken far too literally. However, one thing is obvious - at some point in human history there was a worldwide catastrophe that displaced or effected most everyone. This would explain why so many cultures around the world share so many similarities in their beginnings, including sories of a single major disaster. There are several books that address the subject in great detail - most notably by Graham Hancock, author of “Figerprints of the Gods”… It’s a great read if you’re really serious about the topic of pre-history, and he goes into incredible detail. But like any research, you have to remain objective.

Your chronology is correct…please note that Methuselah was caught up with the Lord just prior to the flood…see in Genesis as well. He was the only human ever to have gone to heaven without an earthly death (if you will). So, he did not die in the flood but just prior to it as he was favored by God.

Rob, you’re incorrect.

Enoch did not die an earthly death (also Elijah was taken up to heaven in a chariot). Methuselah lived 969 years and the Bible says he died. The Bible says that Enoch walked with God and then he was no more because God took him. Genesis 5:21-27`

21 When Enoch had lived 65 years, he became the father of Methuselah. 22 And after he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. 23 Altogether, Enoch lived 365 years. 24 Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

25 When Methuselah had lived 187 years, he became the father of Lamech. 26 And after he became the father of Lamech, Methuselah lived 782 years and had other sons and daughters. 27 Altogether, Methuselah lived 969 years, and then he died.

Methuselah’s death at the time of the flood was not a coincidence but it was actually predicted at the time of his birth. What you found by accident by doing your maths was known throughout Methuselah’s life..that a judgement would come upon the earth when he died. His father Enoch walked closely with God..so much so that he progressed from this world to the next without physical death (Genesis 5 v24). God must have inspired or directly told Enoch to give his son the name Methuselah because it basically meant ‘Sin has become so great on the earth that upon the death of this child judgement will come’. That can be gleaned from a study of the Hebrew. I’m not a Hebrew scholar myself but I heard it in a sermon about ten years ago about this very sunbject and I never forgot it. Nobody would name their child as such otherwise. And yes, that would have caused Enoch to walk very close to God during the rest of his life on earth! It is because of God’s grace that no-one lived longer than Methuselah in the Bible. And yes, when he died, judgement came in the form of a flood, because at that time as the Bible describes, ‘the thoughts of mens’ hearts were only evil all of the time’. So it wasn’t ‘unlikely’ that Methuselah died as the flood began, it was a sure fire thing, being as it had long been divinely prophesied. I hope this throws light upon this great question!

Fascinating. I’ve always liked studying stuff like this, but I usually have to hear a sermon or something, as I’ve never taken the initiative myself to do some research on hebrew orwhatever

Hello,
I’ve just posted my first Bible Math lecture. It is titled, “Bible Math: The 9-Day Multiplier and Cumulative Effects.” Please visit http://www.pbwmodel.com, click on the Lectures link, then the Bible Math link to be taken to the Bible Math Web Page. I will be posting further Bible Math lectures soon. For the fellow who studied Genesis Chapter 5, kindly peek at my paper titled, The Christ Model. It shows one aspect of how the scripture writers encrypted the Genesis Chapter 5 numerical references as part of the (subjective: objective) equilibratory alignment transition scheme. Comments and criticisms are welcome. D. Randall Jenkins, Ph.D.

Hello,
My third Bible Math Lecture titled, 666, will be posted by June 6, 2006. WARNING!!! If you grasp the lecture the fun of scary movies will be diluted. So study the Bible Lecture at your own risk. This Bible Math Lecture will explain several matters in relation to scripture and, particularly, the Book of Revelation. It explains Satan or the Antichrist is a metaphor for the scripture writers’ “Efficient Recalcitrance Assumption,” and 666 is a numerical reference for the 13-Step ERA process that characterizes the undoing of the second Star of David in a set of two hierarchically structured and interrelated Stars of David. Such a set of Stars of David define ordered objective equilibratory alignment. The lecture also explains “Jesus” is a metaphorical reference for unordered objective equilibratory alignment that explains the formation of a single Star of David out of two equilateral triangles; the “Christ” is a metaphor for a set of two Stars of David and the transition from one to the other in ordered objective equilibratory alignment; and the Antichrist is a metaphor for the ERA. Mark it on your calendars now — June 6, 2006 — and come read the lecture and watch the video on http://www.pbwmodel.com, Lectures, Bible Math. Comments, questions and criticisms are welcome. Very truly yours, D. Randall Jenkins, Ph.D.

Jesse,

Actually, I’ve been sitting on my 666 analysis for a few years. I watched a promo for the upcoming Damien movie in the theatre last week and it gave me the idea to publish my 666 analysis by June 6, 2006. In order for you to understand the forthcoming 666 analysis please read the papers on ordered and ordered model processes that may be found on PBW Model.Com. The first is titled, Ordered Conflict Resolution. It deals with unordered model processes. The second is titled, Ordered Model Processes, Reference Declaration and the Economic Organization: Implications for a Balanced Scorecard Contextual Framework. It addresses the ordered model processes which leads to Star of David formation. Be advised my next Bible Math Lecture will share the evidence adduced to date regarding Numbers Chapters 1, 2 and 26 Twelve Tribe Position and Census change explanations. The evidence supports my arguments such twelve tribe reports are model driven and are not reports of historical fact; and, that scripture is an emcrypted social choice theory model. Your further comments and criticisms are welcome and appreciated. D. Randall Jenkins, Ph.D.

My birthday is June 6th!

I think if enough people believe the world is going to descend into chaos and end soon - it probably will. The masses frighten me more than any Bible prediction ever would.
