The AdSense algorithms try to arrange it so that the most-paying ads show up first. Note that in my article I did say not to overdo it with the ads. However, you have to experiment to find what's right for you. I know someone who has a page that has 3 ad units on it as well as Chitika ads... and it has done extremely well for him. There are no hard-and-fast rules, it really depends on what the site's about. If there are only a few advertisers paying good money, show less ads.
