No this is not a list. ;)
I don’t know what it is with me lately, but it seems my personal development has taken a radical shift. It used to be that I would go into a bookstore only to find a tech “recipe” book like O’Reillys Introduction to BIND or the PHP Cookbook. Maybe a certification exam prep book if I was preparing for a test.
Recently, I’ve been focusing on leadership principles, reading leadership blogs, and generally shaping myself for a longer and different run at things. Today, I spent three hours at Books-a-Million doing nothing but reading through John C. Maxwell’s 21 Indispensible Qualities of a Leader. It was really interesting.
The book is chock-full of principles that I could easily start a whole blog on. All of John Maxwell’s books are like that though. One phrase stood out in my mind. I may sleep on it, toss it around, work it through my own craw and do a three part series on this in a few weeks. We’ll see. A rough paraphrase from my memory is:
Effectively motivating people is to give them something to feel, something to remember and something to do.
I suppose that doesn’t have the punch it did when I read it. There’s so much to apply to growing in this area, though. Lots to think about.

It’s so true that the qualities of a leader are essential to your leadership success. You can have leadership skills dripping from your fingers, but it’s how you walk the talk, and make a connection that has more influence
