Digital Camera Shopping

I feel bad about giving my wife a hard time (and if she reads this I’m in trouble), but when we separated, she took our digital camera and it was working perfectly fine. She has moved back in and it no longer works. You can push the button to snap a picture but the picture never takes.

So, we’re in the market for a new camera. I’d like to get into photoblogging so I’d like a higher end camera like the Canon EOS 30D, but I really can’t afford that. Instead, I’m looking for a GREAT quality camera in the $200-$250. I’m about convinced that I’ll never get a decent photoblogging camera for that price but something nice to point and click with.

    I sweary by Olympus. They’ve got great prices, and they’re always really top quality. They seem to be one of the top makers of digital cameras, so it’s usually not too hard to find a good deal on one somewhere in the Sunday ads. Usually Best Buy or Circuit City or someone will have some kind of special…

    Kodaks tend to be kind of cheapy and not all that great. Canons are always a good choice

    Before buying checkout Ebay…. I don’t think you’ll find better prices…

    Yeah, Mike… Been looking there too. The thing is I’m a little wary about buying electronics on eBay. I don’t know why. Call it a paranoia. It’s the one way I’m not so geeky… I’m more like a stuffy grandmother, but I just don’t trust eBay’s electronics…

    I swear by Canon. PowerShot G series is excellent; if it’s too expensive, I would check out the SD/S series. Stay away from the lower end A series. Nikon also makes nice cameras. They’re nice, small cameras (by that, I mean reasonably sized!) that take excellent pictures.
    I’ve never liked Olympus ones; the UI is far too difficult to master, and they always seem to produce bad pictures – poor autofocus and poor battery life.
    Be wary of the pin-hole cameras with infinite megapizel resolution (Sony, in particular). =)

    Personally Aaron, I don’t swear by anything. I have an old HP Photosmart C200 (1.3 megapixel) and it still works!

    I do like Olympus 35mm SLR cameras, and so I can agree with Jesse that they atleast make good ones.

    Rule of thumb tho: If you’re going to buy a serious digital (one that takes good shots) go with companies who’ve been in the old school film business first. They have the most experience in the camera biz and I would trust any of them over some new-tech not known outfit. Nikkon, Olympus, Minolta, Polaroid, Kodak, etc.

    Just my two cents. :)
