The CIA is Reading…

Michael posts a great entry about the CIAs Open Source Center existing for the purpose of voraciously and unquellingly (I love using big words and making words up) consuming unclassified internet sources for intelligence info. In other words, they’re reading blogs, the single greatest source of citizen journalism that is up to the minute.

The OSC is responsible for gathering intelligence from the Internet, newspapers, magazines, and other unclassified sources of information worldwide. Its analyses are disseminated to intelligence customers ranging all the way from the President to local police departments.

Among other sources, the OSC is aggressively reading and monitoring weblogs. So now, the things you and I say online could ultimately wind up in the Oval Office and influence Presidential decision making.

But what is really funny is one of the comments by a guy calling himself J Bruno.

Two years from now great strides in U.S. intelligence will be made when the government learns how enclose search terms in quotes. It will be the greatest revolution in government intel. since the CIA’s discovery of Google.

Priceless.

see, that’s the main conundrum i have with blogging, since i work for the gubment – i know, i know… freedom of speech and all that – but when you have a clearance (or apply for one) you are, in effect, giving up your right for free speech… you never really know what could be taken as subversive and have your clearance pulled… big brother is always watching…

    Maureen,

Make sure you read the entry that Michael wrote earlier and linked to in his article about scaping his server logs for government browsing. It was interesting and really very funny.
