I’m Addicted to Movable Type

It’s heresy, I tell you, heresy. I have preached so long against Movable Type, but I decided to install it for Backstage Pass and I really love it. Keep in mind, the last time I had used MT was back in the version 2.6 days nearly 3 years ago. They have done ALOT since then that up until recently was only head knowledge.

I still love WordPress and have no intention of leaving the fold. There’s quite a lot in WordPress that I prefer over Movable Type: Ease of installation, simplicity in themes and plugins, it’s free no matter what. But there’s a lot in Movable Type that makes me really love it too: multiple blog support from a single admin panel, really robust support for API clients (it supports a separate password for API clients so your main password doesn’t have to be sent in the clear!), etc.

I’m in a self-collision moment now, though, as I’m planning on dragging The Not So Free State into a new subdomain, http://politics.technosailor.com (non-existent yet) and would actually like to use MT for it, however there is an asinine licensing scheme in place that would require me to pay $70 for a license that would allow me to have multiple authors on that blog. Stupidity, really.

So I’m in a quandry. I can use WordPress for free with multiple author support or I can buy a license to Movable Type, power Backstage Pass and Politics from the same admin panel with multipleauthor support and pay $70.

Jesse is going to make fun of me now. One thing I can say for Movable Type, however, is that there is NO Rich Text Editor. Yay!

You got that right. I logged into a movablye type site and had to resist the urge to instantly click away.

It’s not very well laid out, slightly confusing, just not that great. It’s also not free as in beer like wp, open source, and it doesn’t have a community anything like that of wp.

    into a new subdomain, http://politics.technosailor.com (non-existent yet)

Did you do that for the sole purpose of tracking how many poor souls (like mine) went there anyways?

As for getting the liscense, is MT really so much more fun to use than wordress that you’ll pay 70 bucks to use it? 70 bucks buys you a lot more than a liscense fee for some second-class blogging software…

Yeah, it buys him the ability to send us each 35$ via PayPal ;-)

Jesse: Haha… It will be a fun side effect to watch won’t it? :-)

Jeremy: Yeah I know, right! :)

That would be an excellent use for it. Amazon gift cards are also tolerable

    Hiya,

Your new layout rox. Also, I’d prefer Wordpress to MT anyday, a couple of features is all that MT has got new, WP everything is new!
