Zaccharias Mousaoui is a confessed criminal and terrorist and admitted crimes committed demand a certain punishment. Yet there are people protesting the death penalty being used on him.
Mexicans coming into the United States from Mexico without a passport or visa break every immigration law and process in the book. Yet, there is this ideaological civil war going on that demands equal rights, equal jobs, equal opportunity for these people.
In Maryland, we are faced with a 72% energy rate hike because regulators have artificially maintained low energy rates and now market forces are taking over and driving the price higher. Yet, capitalists around the state are protesting market forces setting energy rates since it will hit even the capitalists in the pocketbook.
We have a conflict of interest in this nation and it is represented in the conflict between a bedrock of our nations, “And Justice for All” and the idealogical view of the world that says everything must be fair.
Fairness is a concept that is socialist by every account because it demand that everyone be treated equally. But even in socialism, fairness doesn’t exist because fairness is only fair for those subjected by the strong (and there are always strong). Inflicting fairness on people sets up a closet group that do not have the same principles of fairness applied and benefit from the shortcomings of fairness to others. Remember the pigs in George Orwell’s 1984 Animal Farm? “All animals are created equal. Some are created more equal than others.”
Everyday we call for fairness when our nation was built on justice. Why can’t I get this benefit that she gets? Why does this person get treated in one way and another person is treated in another way.
Justice recognizes that in every situation, people are different, variables are different and outcomes will be different. Fairness expects that the same set of elemnents defining a situation will be true in all cases.
Our nation is one built on laws and justice. Political correctness seeks to do an end-around justice and replace it with fairness. Unfortunately, this concept is so ingrained in society and is the driving force behind nations deteriorating into socialism.

Fairness, Life is not fair. Asking for fairness without giving your fair share certainly is not Justice… Justice for all and fairness for those who earn it… Is it fair that taxpaying American citizens are losing jobs to illegal aliens? A misunderstanding of justice and fairness is the root cause of many of the problems in our society. The issues such as illegal immgigration, medicare, social security, etc are issues coming from the misunderstanding. They are not the cause of the misunderstanding.
I would extend my thoughts by saying that justice and fairness cannot peacefully co-exist for long because at some point, the goal of fairness overshadows the goal of justice. But justice offers the framework for a society that can withstand storms and has been the basis of most of America’s history. It has only been in the past 50 years where fairness has taken a higher place in what is expected by society.
