YPN Sees MySpace as Evil, Bans Publishers

Posted by: Aaron Brazell
Woodlawn, MD, USA

Yahoo Publisher Network sent notices out on Friday to a number of publishers on Friday informing them that, as of Monday their YPN accounts would be terminated due to low quality traffic coming from MySpace. Yet another item in my ever-growing reasons of why MySpace is the spawn of Satan and needs to be sent into http oblivion.

Jen has a good write up on the topic:

It has long been known that source of traffic can result in an AdSense suspension, but this is the first time it has been known that either AdSense or YPN has been targeting not only a single specific source of traffic, but also one that is somewhat legitimized as being a true site… as opposed to the “get 20,000 visitors to your site for only $19.99″ variety that is usually targeted for being poor quality.

However, this definitely opens up questions about what other sites that YPN will target next? Will all social networking type of sites be targeted? Or was MySpace a notable exception. But it definitely seems that users monetizing MySpace through YPN were definitely targeted, since all were contacted Friday with their accounts being suspended on the following Monday.

I agree that myspace is the suck; i hate it. But is it really OK to ban a publisher from using YPN simply because of the source of traffic? It just seems grossly unfair to me.

I hate to say it: but before jumping to any conclusions, sometimes webmasters aren't completely forthcoming about the reasons their website is banned. YPN has been very good to me, so this probably influences my decision.

Darren: I'm not passing judgement on YPN. I am running YPN ina number of places and have no beef with them. Historically, I have a beef with MySpace (search my archives) and to me this is good news that MySpace is going to take a hit on this.

Aaron, I'm checking it out right now. Personally, I never paid much attention to MySpace. I actually thought it was solely for kids, so I never devoted time to exploiting the traffic.

I would imagine they were redirecting pretty non-qualified traffic from MySpace to the advertiser's websites, and with the amount per click advertisers pay, be sure they're watching carefully. At least Yahoo kicked them out personally, so that was a nice touch ;)

MySpace to you is like a good mixed drink... you think it's just for kids until one day you wake up and it kicks your butt. :-) This is how I feel about MySpace. Yes for kids. No issues with safety, etc. My issue is with the quality of traffic and that places like Technorati are now indexing MySpace blogs as if they were on the same level as other blogs. Sleeping Giantisms.

If you send successive pitches, you will likely be ignored, unless it's obvious that the first pitch was a case of "accidental send", etc.

This form of pitching does not mean I'm being a diva.
