General Clean Up

Lots of work on Technosailor tonight.

  • Disabled a slew of plugins I don’t use.
  • Cleaned up a bunch of javascript I don’t use.
  • Did away with all advertising on this site except the Text Link Ads on the right.

Basically, this has cut the load time on this blog from about 2.5 seconds per pageview (very slow) to a half-second (very fast). I’m pretty happy. Dropping ads is the biggest thing and I’ll explain that and make other changes in the near future.

Much better. Load time is now at normal blog level.

I was noticing that your load time was really starting to crawl. Big javascript packages, ads, and stat packages can really do that to you. Are you using prototype for the live search/ajax commenting?

Well Bad Behavior added 1.5 seconds! And yes, livesearch uses a modified prototype package.

“Are you using prototype for the live search/ajax commenting?”

That’s only a big deal on the first load (unless Aaron disabled caching on it for some reason). You can also use moo.fx instead which is only 3kb instead of ~40.

This is cool though, it was starting to get really slow round here. :)

Well, folks should get used to Prototype being in WordPress. It is being seriously considered for the next version of WP because tw-sack (and moo.fx) both have serious functionality limitations.

I have no problem with prototype (hell it’s on my site ;)), but then again I have 6mbps cable at home.

The site did load much faster this morning. Sigh, I clean up the site and end up either rerouting it or breaking it.
