United 93

Just went and saw it at the dollar theater last night.

Stunning.

At the end of the last scene, where the passengers storm the cockpit in a failed attempt at regaining control which ends with the plan crashing into a field, the screen goes black for about five seconds, and other than the sound of a few people crying, the theater was absolutely silent. As the credits started to roll people sat in their seats for about five seconds before finally getting up and silently walking out.

Never before, with, perhaps, the exception of The Passion have I seen anything like that.

All in all, the movie was just incredibly well done. It’s 111 minutes long, and after the first ten or so minutes where it sets up the stage, the rest of the movie is all in real time, so you get an exact idea of how things unfolded. Some of the characters (a few guys in the control towers, etc.) played themselves, which made things even more realistic.

Thankfully the directors knew better than to make stuff up, or reading too much into anything, and the movie only touches on know facts, with only enough written in for things to make sense.

The Terrorists aren’t overly villianized, but they didn’t really need to be. They are simply shown as the radical, coldblooded Muslim extremists that they were.

Was it too soon after 9/11? Most people don’t think so, and the ones that do are the same people that adored Michael Moore’s fantasy film “Fahrenheit 9/11″.

All in all, one of the best movies I’ve seen in months. Entertaining? No, not really. Sobering? Very. A must-see? Yes, definitely.

Wow, who are these ‘most people’?

The families of the victems, for one, and the half of America that loved Fahrenheit 9/11 so much. If they didn’t find it too soon after 9/11 for a fictional “documentary” on it, then surely they didn’t find it too soon for such a good film.

what has it added that we didn’t know already?

Quite a bit, actually, unless you’ve read the 9/11 Comission, and just about every other bit of evidence from that day. I learned a lot

apart from to make some filmmakers cash – unless that’s being donated to some worthy casue? I doubt it

Actually, a significant portion of the income is being given, I believe, to a 9/11 memorial or something like that. They aren’t pocketing all of it
