WordCamp Countdown

Posted by: Aaron Brazell

A few weeks ago, I announced that I’d be heading to the Bay Area for WordCamp 2006. Indeed, I leave Thursday and will be out there all weekend. It looks to be a great time, with some much needed downtime for myself in the process. I’ve never been to San Francisco, so this is sort of a big deal for me. What to do while I’m there. I’ve nearly convinced myself to visit Alcatraz.

But anyways, WordCamp. Some real interesting sessions happening. I’ve suggested the Blog Architecture session. Blog Architecture has been a hot item for me recently and though there’s many people who probably could deliver that session, it’s fresh and recent in my mind and I’ve got a bit of experience because of it. No word yet, on whether that will happen.

And speaking of blog architecture, Cam Reilly and I are planning a podcast on the subject next week. Cam’s in Australia and I’ll be in San Francisco so hopefully our schedules will mesh for that. Should be fun and it would be the first real podcast I’ve ever done.

Since you’ve never been to San Fran Aaron, let me give you a few tips.

The last time I was there was in 2000 for some technical training so things may have changed.

    1) Use the Commuter Rail, Buses, and Subway systems as much as you can. You can get anywhere in San Fran/Oakdale very cheaply on public trans.

However, nothing beats chauffers so if people are going to be driving you around, there’s nothing nicer than that eh? LOL

    2) San Fran has GREAT sourdough bread. There is this Sony “Mall” in downtown. At the food court on the first level they had this place where you could get philly cheese steak sandwiches on sourdough bread. It was awesome!

    3) I managed to get to chinatown and fisherman’s wharf. Both are excellent tourist sites and worth looking around.

Good luck, have fun, be safe!

As a resident, I vote that you bag Alcatraz. If you really want to take a boat ride on the bay, pack a picnic lunch and a bottle of wine and go to Angel Island; it’s a much funner trip and the history (to me anyway) is far more meaningful — Angel Island is the Ellis Island of the West.

Get some restaurant recommendations and eat out every night without fail. Have cocktails somewhere up high (either the Equinox in the Hyatt or Top of the Mark on Nob Hill).

    Looking forward to meeting you!

Have a massive time mate… Massive.

I’m sure I’ll hear no end of your experiences anyway, but I’m looking forward to hearing about what you get up to.

In all honesty I’m not at all bothered about WordCamp, but I’d really like to know about what you experience out there :)

Twitter pitching is a form of pitch that requires succint "what does this mean for me" kind of pitching. It is the ultimate efficiency of words. You have 140 characters or less to tell me why your pitch matters to me or my readers. Please include a means of contacting you. This is included in your 140 characters. If you send successive pitches, you will likely be ignored, unless it's obvious that the first pitch was a case of "accidental send", etc.

This form of pitching does not mean I'm being a diva. It means that my time is valuable, and you want a piece of it. It's good practice for you, and delivers your pitch in a format I want. Win-win.
