Shopping for a New Guitar

The day has come. My Ibanez guitar is broke. The bridge has cracked and come off the body of the guitar. I could probably get it repaired, but I’ve decided that I need to start looking for a new guitar anyway.

Right now, I’ve got this Seagull (Seagull’s are Canada’s best kept secret) in mind – actually have been watching it for over a year now – but it will take a few months of saving before I can get it, I think. But, my birthday is coming up in two weeks. ;)

I’ve got 2 seagulls, and they rule. I actually like the sound better than any of the sub-$1500 Martins and Taylors I tried.

I’ve tried a few Seagulls I liked, but like any type of guitar, there are some good and some bad.

I personally have a Martin 00016 (1994, they don’t make them the same anymore) and a Gibson J45 (2004). I have never found a guitar that rivals the tone or feel of the Martin. My dad has a $2400 Taylor, and he admits that even his guitar doesn’t match it. Sometimes you just get a good one. The Gibson needs a little bit of a setup.

I don’t want to sound too old school, but I hope you have actually have a chance to try whatever guitar you purchase. Every guitar plays and sounds different.

Norman is another good Canadian guitar that is made in Quebec. http://www.normanguitars.com/intro.htm

BTW – I enjoy reading your blog. Take care.

We have a Seagull dealer 3 miles from me. I’ll try anything I buy before I buy it. :)

Seagulls are nice, certainly. I have a Sigma DM-1 (early ’90s) and a Taylor 410 (‘93, they also don’t make these the same anymore). Both are good guitars and, with new strings on them, I’d play them at just about any acoustic gig or recording session.

I’ve always liked Simon and Patrick guitars. Ask around and play some if you can get them where you are.

And if your guitar is broken, how can you wait a few months to replace it!?

I had a seagull acoustic that I absolutely loved.

I’ve also had a Jackson JJ series, and a Fender Mexi-Strat with Texas Special pickups.

While on vacation I ran into a husband and wife couple from Cali who play nothing but Taylor guitars and swear by them. However, after looking at the pricetags, I can’t get them for the forseeable future.

Since I no longer own any of my former guitars (bad financial times caused me to sell them) I am looking for something inexpensive which won’t break the bank, and will satisfy my craving to play again.

Good luck Aaron, I envy your search!
