MySpace Blogs

Interestingly enough, in the world of blogging, MySpace has actually been a very beneficial thing. I’ve often ranted about MySpace and some of the quality of content produced there. I rail against the idea that people that use MySpace tend to call entries ‘blogs’ when in fact they are not. Example: “I just wanted to write this blog to let all of you know…”. Correct analism suggests that this should be properly worded, “I just wanted to write this post [Also can use entry here] to let you all know…”

However, putting personal preferences and semantic language aside, MySpace blogs have been a boon for the industry of blogging. There’s a few reasons for that:

  1. More Content. Content is always good. Sometimes it’s not so beneficial for search engines or Technorati as relevant content is not always what content is. Content just is, whether relevant or not. What MySpace blogs have done is provide an avenue for people to produce. Production is good and quality production is something that is learned by participating in things like myspace blogs.
  2. Creative Production. Building on point #1, myspace blogs provide an avenue for people to begin to think on their own, communicate on their own and carry on interaction with people they might not necessarily otherwise coverse with. Talking creates streams of thought that puts a consumer in the role of a creator.
  3. Awareness of New Media. Blogs have become relatively mainstream. Even if your average internet user doesn’t know the word ‘blog’, chances are they read them. The concept of ‘regularly produced content‘ is something that any internet user can relate to and wants, and the label ‘blog’ is simply a catchphrase that people are now ‘getting’. I am often asked what I do and I used to prelude that answer with “Do you know what a blog is?” Most of the time, nowadays, that is not necessary. Myspace blogs have made a somewhat mystical-concept and made it mainstream.

MySpace blogging is not what I would call the best blogging in the world. In fact, mostly it sucks. I find it great that The Blogging Times has launched a new video blog about MySpace content (music), but realistically we have to go outside MySpace Blogs to find quality MySpace content. Strange huh?

But no matter, the effects of MySpace can be felt throught the blogging world and look out, they are our next generation of bloggers. When younger bloggers tell me they are blogging on MySpace, I gently advise them to consider WordPress.com as an alternate, but yet encourage them in their efforts. To have a sandbox for thinking and writing before breaking onto the main stage is probably a benefit many of todays other bloggers could have used.

Good entry. I especially agree with your words about “Awareness of New Media”. MySpace is giving average internet users exposure to new Internet media types without them even knowing it.

Anything that gets people into the world of self-publishing is good, IMO.

One thing you don’t mention here: MySpace is HEAVILY used by musicians. It’s a great way for many up and coming bands to get their work heard by a wide audience. So the textual content on MySpace may be no great shakes, but it’s proving an excellent platform for other types of media. Other people, like ZeFrank, have made great use of MySpace to spread the word about their vblogging.

    Myspace has textual content?

Self-publishing is certainly good, but so is actually having something to say.

You are right….. you gotta branch away and view it from a different perspective and then it seems the way you say…

PS. They are a strong community… ie., some blogs generate a huge number of loyal comments

I strongly agree with yout opinions about my space. i think it’s amazing to have somthing like that, it is so easy to publish ur self and show your talents to a very wide audiance. However some people use it in the very wrong way. that’s why not everybody like to read or response to bloggs

My space is a little emo to begin with, and i suppose the blogs kind of add to that. However, anything that allows people to express themselves and their minds is a good thing in any situation almost.

You really don’t like bright yellow, lime green and baby pink pages with dozens of blinkies? You don’t like it when people respond to every second question with “LOL”? Even though they’re, apparently r0×0rz OMGz!11!!!!!!

I agree, MySpace just makes people dumber.

That choosing not to host a blog on myspace doesn’t automatically mean one has better taste than those who do choose that route. Yeah there’s a lot of stupidity and/or ugliness on myspace, but you can find that stuff all over the internet.
