South of the Border
Darren writes that posting to another mans blog is like driving another mans car, but I do have to disagree somewhat, because for me in a way it’s more like sleeping with his wife. Sure, you might get away with it, it can be fun, but when the owner/ husband gets home he might not be happy.
But I digress, because as much as I could fill these pages with sexual innuendo all day long, I’ve got a more important question to put, themed on Aaron’s current location: Mexico.
Why in the world is America so soft on Illegal Immigration?
Sure, Mexicans take all the crappy jobs American’s don’t want to do themselves, but in a world in which terrorism is a serious threat, the Conservative US Government only gives lip service to border security, and, at least at one stage (might have happen since) was to offer an amnesty and citizenship to millions of illegal immigrants, which is the same putting out the welcome mat for millions of wannabe illegal immigrants wanting to come to the States who haven’t quite got there yet (come to American illegally and not only let you stay, we’ll reward you for it!).
Here is gods own land (Australia) we don’t tolerate illegal immigrants. Famously we didn’t allow a ship load of illegals to come to the mainland back in 2001 (The Tampa Incident), and since illegal immigrants trying to get to Australia are processed mainly offshore. The net result: the numbers of people trying to illegally enter Australia have plumeted to close to zero because they know if they try the chances are they’ll be sent right back to where they came from. And yet, for all that is good about Australia, we are but a small nation of limited means. The United States of America is the most powerful nation the world has ever seen, and yet it can’t control it’s own borders. Go figure.

It’s much harder to control a land border than a water border. Especially when much of it is either desert or mountainous terrain.
In any case, the US has a long tradition of letting people come here and make better lives for themselves. It’s even written on the Statue of Liberty.
I used to think we needed to “control” “illegal immigration” but that was before I found out what the US does to people who attempt to come here legally. It’s a horrendous bureaucratic nightmare, compared to what it was intended to be: “Send us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”
Now we send them away. The days of breathing free are over.

I agree with Michael.
It’s not fair to compare Australia and America. We do have a long history of allowing immigrants into this country. We struggle with immigration policy being mixed up with racism. There are legitimate issues involving the American economy. It’s not as easy as it sounds to deal with illegal immigration.
You say yourself that Australia does not welcome immigrants. When one thinks of Australia you think of two groups of people, the English, and the native citizens who were persecuted. While America certainly has English roots and Native Americans we also have hundreds of other ethnic groups of people who have made America home and made it great.

Big Roy,
I didn’t say Australia didn’t welcome immigrants, indeed some 25% of all Australian’s were born overseas, we also have one of the biggest intakes per capita of any country world wide of refugees as well. What I said was that we don’t tolerate ILLEGAL immigrants. VERY BIG DIFFERENCE.We’ve also got a diverse range of ethnic groups as well.
