Let's start by defining what the heck "Green" means shall we? This looks like "All Natural Ingredients" or "Natural Flavor". Desperation Marketing makes for poor business practices.

Chiming in with a perspective holding generational theory as key, I'd offer this. The Green Thing is a values-based approach to a hard-core problem, right? It's more talk than walk. It's more hype than "get it done." This is a classic Boomer (Prophet archetype) approach to problem-solving: just identify the important VALUES and then everything else (the details of how to make it work) will fall into place.

A generation tends to experience the height of its power (meaning it's downhill from there) when the first birth-year cohorts hit their early 60s. That would be exactly where the Boomers are now.

I think -- at least for me -- that the reason whole Green Thing has become so distasteful is that the hype has squelched the real issue and real solutions. The media machine got behind The Values. And the dominant belief system is now that talking about something and having events is how to solve problems. Yuk.

Call me a GenXer (Nomad archetype), but I'd rather compost, weed by hand and work from home than buy*buy*buy 10% post-consumer waste-whatever toilet paper ... any day.

Rock on, Steve.

All I know is that on Earth Day I raised $28.50 to help the earth by auctioning off my toddler's portrait of a quilted dildo. I mean, is it going to single-handedly save the environment?

Yeah. Probably. It was a pretty kick-ass quilted dildo portrait.

Michelle, take the responsibility to understand what? That if the "green" laws that govern energy usage, for instance, actually get mandated and implemented that the country will be put back in the 1800s? Sorry, that's a non-starter.

I think "pop" scenario #1 is the most likely for the first world, or at least I hope so. Like blogging etc, green is best when woven into the fabric of everyday life and in the background, and not for its own sake.

With oil hitting $118 a barrel, there is no reason why we shouldn't go green. Green isn't just eco-friendly--it will be financially viable.

It would be utterly ridiculous to make biodiesel or ethanol out of corn. It is a labor intensive crop that leaches soil. It's also silly that we do not hear about biodiesels in mainstream media, considering it can be blended with traditional diesels with no modifications to the engine whatsoever. Many countries around the world use diesel engines regularly. They are cleaner burning and faster than ever before.

"Green" will remain a buzzword if people fail to see that creating sustaining technologies helps our health, economy, and position in a global market.
