@queenofspain The union was a great idea when 9-year-olds were getting sucked into machines and hideously mangled. It's less a good idea now that it stands for paying people $120,000 to nap in front of a stack of tools and parts.

Ah, what a bleakly poetic extended metaphor. Really scary to think about the bleakness, but on the other hand - you're right - it can feel great to start from scratch, survive and eventually succeed.

I'm going to start stockpiling beef stew.

Not to drag your great post off topic, but...

I loved the concept of a union, and then I realized that the path is quickly downward.

I don't ever want to be in a union. Why? because I will always be of value to my boss enough to negotiate my terms myself. If I'm not good enough to do that, then I likely don't deserve my job. For me its a survival of the fittest. In a union you're grouped and don't have the flexibility needed to succeed on your own. If I'm not of value enough to my boss, then I shouldn't be there.

Most people want a quiet, simple life though. Not me.

Not directly. I'm pointing out the flaws in the union concept, though, and those flaws exist regardless of how much good they might or might not do.

"...built around an inefficient union mentality that, at one end, limits innovation because it de-incentivizes that innovation, and at the other hand overpays under-qualified individuals to do jobs that are worth half of their paychecks,"

You didn't just think I'd let that sit there, did you? :)

are you union bashing?

It seems like the recurring theme from all of the recent economic news is that running lean may be hard work, but it pays off in hard times. I read that 26 "blue chip" stocks are now in the penny stock category. That says a lot about what's going on. Companies like Ford are now cheaper to own than a gallon of gas. That's just crazy. Easy money has turned out to be certain death for some companies. So, yes I think you're on the mark here and we can't afford to go back to the way things were if and when this storm passes. If we do, we'll only have ourselves to blame and that won't warrant a bail out.
