I'm just floored that such a large media company could make such a huge and careless mistake. The New York Times should have at the very least had their plans reviewed by an outside consultant. There has never been enough peer review of plans, code, system architecture in our industry and it just goes to show easily something can run into a snag despite having capable internal teams.

Presumably the engineers where on the right track with folding their web properties but obviously they never completely understood all the implications. All they had to do was just had hired someone outside their corporate culture that could have said, "wait a minute, this could be a problem".

Great points, this was an excellent write up. Other companies should read this for preventative measures.
