I’m stuck in a quandary.

Since being married my wife and I have had an ongoing debate about certain words which in my opinion are not curse words.

We all know about the 7 words you never say on TV or Radio. They are quite profane, so let’s not get into that, but I frequently can be heard saying two words that prompt my wife to exclaim STOP SWEARING!!!!! and they are:

1)Damn.
2)Hell.

No, I am not kidding here. I have used “damn” in poetic phrases such as “damn it” or “I’ll be damned” or i’ll hear some poli-pundit-liberal spouting off at the alter of euphorianism and tell him or her to “go to hell”. (Which is why my wife doesn’t like me watching political shows with her), and I have occaisionally been known to toss out a few “damn it all to hell” for the double play.

Am I way off base here? Have I stepped into a twilight zone episode? Or is this truly a terrible form of the english language?

Granted, my wife was a Catholic 20 years ago, and perhaps some of that has come from those roots, but there are worse things to say out there and since I do not typically use profane language (as I think it reflects on a lack of vocabulary prowess) I am not seeing her side of this.

Help me out people! What do I do?

Today I don’t know if I should skip down the streets lauding “I Told You So’s” or just sit back and watch those who were wrong eat crow. In either case, I am happy to listen to my gut instincts and continue to cover a guy who is dangerous to America and who is a good case to bolster support for making illegal immigration a felony that warrants immediate deportation of all who hide in our shadows.

I’ve written a post here about Francisco Serrano. I’ve written several pieces about him on my former blog, which I should have backed up, and in my previous articles I’ve pointed out some suspicions I had about this guy.

Nevertheless, I endured flaming from trolls, and people who said just because he’s here illegally doesn’t mean he’s a criminal.

Today, all of you “naysayers” stand corrected:

The saga of a young illegal immigrant found living in Apple Valley High School continues, as he is now charged in a violent home invasion – in Boston.

A Boston woman said Serrano kicked in her apartment door and threatened to attack her early in the morning on March 29.

“He said, ‘I’m not here to steal, I’m here to kill,’” the woman said, requesting anonymity.

Her roommate grabbed a sauce pan and hit Serrano over the head.

“He just hit the guy, and you can see the handle is bent,” the woman said.

The man then chased Serrano down the stairs and into the street.

Boston police say they found Serrano wearing a ski mask, armed with a butcher’s knife and a pocket knife.

So, you see, these people who are here illegally have something to hide, and are not in our country with the pure intent of immigrating. They want something else. While I can speculate and postulate to my hearts content, if they had honest, and legitimate intentions, don’t you think they’d arrive here legally and go through the process like everyone else? Isn’t that the price of becoming an American citizen?

Serrano’s alleged victim says he does not deserve pity.

“It makes me feel like he’s a good con artist. He had everybody fooled,” the woman said.

If convicted, Serrano will serve time in Boston and then be turned over to federal agents for deportation. Experts say if that happens, it is unlikely Serrano will ever be able to return to the U.S.

Finally, someone who doesn’t have their eyes covered.

Case closed.

No, This isn’t a rant on “Bush Lied, People Died”. So let’s clear that up first ok?

I turned 18 in 1990 and tried to vote for Bush senior vs Clinton in 93. Obviously, we know the outcome. After 2 term loser Clinton was run out of office, there was nary a candidate worth voting for besides Bush jr. Heck, with the Gore v. Bush fiasco, it was almost a Gore presidency, but let’s not revisit that nightmare here ok? 2001 was honestly an easy shoe-in for GW to get re-elected. Only if you tried really hard could you have lost that second term in ‘04.

So why did I choose the title I did? In an article written about a totally different issue that I’m engrossed in, there was rumor and speculation that Florida Gov. Jeb was a good candidate for the McCain Presidential ticket.

The Florida governor has said he does not intend to run for president in 2008. But he has been mentioned as a potential running mate for another likely candidate, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.).

I fear another Bush term. Not because it’s a Bush. Well, maybe it is. ;) I say this because in watching how GW handled 2001, how he continues to bomb (sorry about the pun) on issues of national and homeland security, and his guest worker/amnesty/illegal immigrant proposals has given me second doubts on anything that the Bush family is capable of.

GW certainly hasn’t done anything to win my support or to keep me thinking “Yeah, McCain/Bush for ‘08″. In fact, that is THE MOST frightening ticket I’ve ever heard of.

Gov. Bush’s stance on illegal immigration is the same as his brother. They have decided as a political family to voice that good ol’ unified family mantra. That’s cool, back up the blood, I’m all for having your homeboy’s six. But that stance, killed my mood for anything Bush in the political arena.

I have argued for a long time now how the 2 party system in America has been bad for the country. Just like teacher’s unions, political correctness, school tax levy’s, public stadium funding, and non-referendum voting states, government has been trampling on our voices. Be it local, state, or federal politicians, we are not heard, and the two party system for many years now has fought to keep it that way.

If it’s one thing I have learned during my short time as a legal voter is that Democrats, and Republicans can have their pet issues, and will fight tooth and nail with the other side for their slice of the pie. But they will stick together like bees to honey when it comes to losing power in any kind of government. That is why it is very hard to get green party, constitutional party, or libertarian candidates on the ticket. It’s is even more difficult to get media coverage on candidates other than the two major parties because dems and reps don’t want to be challenged by outsiders.

I truly believe that if there is a good, qualified candidate outside the two party system, and he or she was given the same coverage like the other two party people, America would start changing their minds about being pigeon-holed into an “either-or” situation. “The lesser of two evils”.

Look, in Minnesota, the voters had enough crap with Dems and Reps that we voted in Ventura. He had charisma, he was different, and the voters were fed up. Yes, he sucked like there was no tomorrow and he still sucks, but he shook up politics. Not enough in my opinion, and certainly he couldn’t get a change in our legislature. Our legislature was too busy that term to fight everything Ventura wanted to do that they didn’t get much else accomplished.

The Dems and Reps wanted to crush the hopes of anyone not from the mainstream because they didn’t want to lose the power they’ve come to achieve. That’s why McCain-Feingold passed, and that’s why you saw them fight to silence and censor blogs from writing about political candidates.

I am going off on a tangent here, but I am trying to illustrate a point.

Bush in the White House is lethal. Nothing will change, nothing will get done EXCEPT the status quo. That status quo is the same if Hillary was in or McCain. Fight to keep the two party system in tact, fight for our pet projects, even if that means that as a Republican you start funding major social reforms like a Dem would, or if you’re a Democrat, start a war in a foreign country and pretend you care about our security.

Either case, if a Democrat or Republican wins the Presidency we lose.

I was all for Condi running against Hillary, but I see Condi as someone soft on Bush mantras. Not that she is a puppet of Bush’s, just that she wouldn’t have her career in politics if it wasn’t for Bush, and that is not a qualification to be a President. One that would have our country’s best interests in mind atleast.

Especially if you think we should have a guest worker program, and that illegals shouldn’t be charged with felonies and deported post haste.

The Tuscon Citizen published this article today:

An illegal immigrant anywhere in Arizona would be guilty of a felony under a bill approved by the state House of Representatives.

The bill, approved 32-26 yesterday, had been approved previously by the Senate but now returns to that chamber to consider changes made by the House.

The bill would permit a first-time violator to be turned over to federal authorities, but also states the legislative intent that a repeat offender should be criminally prosecuted.

All 32 yes votes - one more than needed in the 60-member House - came from majority Republicans, while six Republicans joined all 20 Democrats in voting against the bill.

Democratic Rep. Ted Downing of Tucson later predicted that Republicans would experience a backlash. “This will be the rallying cry for every group and kid in the state,” he said.

House Majority Leader Steve Tully, R-Phoenix, said he was voting reluctantly for the bill and hoped that it would be changed by a House-Senate conference committee.

We as readers and bloggers talk about this issue a lot. I don’t see our congressmen and women at the capital taking any hints about the legality or illegalities of this issue.

They want amnesty for illegals, but they don’t want you to see them label it as amnesty.

They want companies to continue to benefit from hiring illegals, but don’t embezzle millions of dollars from people.

I know this comes down to horse trading and politics, but when congress and those at the top quit playing games with national security and start leading this country, we are bound to see this serious issue minimized and turned around on those of us who know the dangers and are about to take matters into their own hands.

If officers who have authority are supposed to enforce laws and yet continue not to do so. What choices are left to the individual law abiding citizen?

I call it “CYA”

I am a HUGE fan of movies. Perhaps mostly as an outlet for my imagination, or maybe it’s just addictive brain candy, in either case, I have spent a lot of my life making the movie industry rich. Some of my choices to pay money for movies can be anything from political motivations to pure entertainment. I’m pretty sure that like you I choose movies that look interesting or intriguing to me first, the wife second (she likes those sappy flicks), then maybe, just maybe, if one comes out and raises a lot of hooplah.

“V for Vendetta” is such a movie.

As someone who reads blogs frequently, I head over to the Counter Terrorism Blog as much as I can. Mostly I read because it helps me focus on Homeland Security issues. But I was interested in this article. In it Andrew Cochran writes about a movie I’m interested in watching.

He states:

What are the Warner Brothers studio and parent company Time Warner thinking? They’ve released a movie, “V for Vendetta,” that is simply a pro-terrorism movie. Sure, it hides behind an attractive theme of “revolution” against a totalitarian government, but the methods it promotes are right out of the Al Qaeda 9-11 attack handbook by blowing up London landmarks and justifying it as resistance: “Blowing up a building can change the world.” The fact that this movie is also anti-Christian, with a modified cricifix employed as the symbol of the government, only adds to my distaste and my disappointment in TW.

Does that sway you to see it or not?

I know everyone on planet earth is hypersensitive about terrorism. ESPECIALLY HERE. But, even if this movie “glorifies terrorism”, do you think banning or not producing films would help society? If so, does that mean you are for some kind of pro-socialism movement which would lend itself to censoring just the things that would deprogram a behavior of civil unrest against a government?

Would that do anything besides spawning more terrorism?

Sure, a ficticious movie glorifies a central figure as a hero. Sure, critics who HAVE SEEN THE MOVIE, say that it’s about terrorism in London. But, does that mean just because it’s not liked, or glorifies terrorism or terrorist acts, that we should outright censor a public from viewing the film?

I will be the first one to admit that Hollywood has been producing A TON of propoganda type films. They are liberals and you take what you can get. I vote with my money and films that don’t appeal to me do not get my hard earned funds. That being said, too many people shy away from the advocation of personal responsibility and turn to laws that legislate behavior as a means to force responsibility and that is no way to legislate or run a country whose principles are freedom.

Terrorism is an awful way to get your point across, no question about that. However, fictional stories that open your eyes and make you think, question, and ponder are not necessarily bad things. Movies are marketing. With any marketing comes your personal choice of “Do I? Don’t I?”

No one says you have to, but, I would rather watch and view controversial subjects to ponder it’s significance, than not have the freedom to see movies, read books, that someone, some where deemed was bad for me to read.

That’s not freedom, that’s communism.

The whole state of Minnesota reflects and mourns for Kirby Puckett who died yesterday of complications from a massive stroke. Of course the world knows Puckett as a Minnesota Twin (1984-1996). For me, my memories of Kirby come from being a kid who for the first time ever looked at an athlete as a role model.

Stories are many and wide of people who will tell you where they were in the 1987 and 1991 during the Twins World Series championship games. For each of us, Kirby Puckett was a real guy and a real Minnesotan besides being in a rare class of athletic stardom. There isn’t a story where you won’t find someone who said of Kirby: “I just walked up to him and asked for an autograph. He smiled, asked my name, grabbed a pen, signed away.” He was a terrific guy who cared as much about his fans as his fans cared about him.

He had his controversies after he retired. His marriage fell apart. He was charged with groping a woman in a bathroom but was later acquitted of all charges, and then he quietly faded from the public eye. Out of all the sports mega stars then and now, none of them has had the class as Kirby has.

I can remember as a kid going to a Twins game when Hrbek and Puckett were playing. Many of those trips were school sponsored field trips in which we had great seats and got to stay for the whole game. It was then I was wowed by the homeruns and grand slams that the Hrbek and Puckett machine belted into the stadium. It was a more innocent time for me. I was never into sports like a lot of people I see today. While I find entertainment from watching some sports, it’s not my motivating factor for getting up in the morning. Computers and gadgets are another matter, but now I’m getting off-track.

At any rate, Kirby Puckett is the first and probably the last athlete/celebrity whom I actually felt an attachment too where upon learning of his death, made me cry. Perhaps I’m overtly sensitive considering all of the death in my life in the past few years, but regardless, Kirby has meant a lot to me.

I can distinctly attribute my love for baseball to Kirby and “Herby”. Where most of the sports hype has not reached me, these guys have. Real, genuine, humble sports guys whom to this day any one can approach and talk to.

I didn’t own a baseball jersey right up to today, but I will be on the hunt for a Puckett #34 jersey. Not the cheap rip off mind you, but one that I think would adequately reflect his spirit which lives within me.

He was a great guy for baseball, he was a fan’s man and I think not only will his stories live on through out all of us who came to know and love him, but his example and his spirit will live on as well.

I know that Heavenly Father brought him home for a reason, likely he needed an expert on his team.

Rest in Peace Kirby, you did well.

(Update [6:40pm CST]: A local station here in the Twin Cities posted an interview with Kirby Puckett in August of 2001 in which Kirby was interviewed, I believe, after being entered into Baseball’s Hall of Fame. The link to that audio can be found on the station’s website here, it’s a great interview and shows you an inside to the Kirby I knew)

We all have them: some one in our family who is a little odd, or not on center. Be it a crazy aunt, a strange uncle, etc. None of that prepared me for what I’m about to share with you.

First of all, most of my family know I blog. My wife has read some of my pieces, and interestingly enough is completely opposite as me as far as political issues go. (Yeah that surprised me). What I’m going to say here is a sensitive issue for my in-law family. I’m not going to reveal any “true identities” even if my family reads this they will know who I am talking about.

I write this article not to shed light on the persons problem, I write this article because I have mixed feelings and I want to get it out of my system and ask Technosailor readers what they think about my situation.

Last Monday evening (2/27/06) , my wife and I finally had some time to cuddle on the couch after a tough weekend. As an “experienced” husband (2nd time around for me), I know that ALL newlyweds have an adjustment period. This is where personalities clash, you have strange quirks that the other person has to get used to, etc. This weekend was no exception, but we had harbored some resentments. Well, Monday was that makeup day for us. We were in the process of cuddling on the bed (don’t get any funny ideas), and having some deep meaningful and open conversations about our feelings and issues. My wife suddenly dropped the motherload of bombshells into my lap.

To start out, I love my new extended family. I got really lucky. My mother in law has her issues about my wife and I getting married (she thinks my wife robbed the cradle LOL), but if that’s my only quirk I got lucky right? So far I have spent most of every holiday with them in some fashion. I’ve gone to family reunions with them, BBQ’s, and many sporting events, movies, etc.

To explain my wife’s side she has two brothers, a sister, and two half sisters (same father). Each of them has a significant other and up to now, had seemed “normal”. In otherwords, no weird character flaws, or something that throws you off with them.

That changed when my wife confessed to me something about her step-sister’s boyfriend. My wife’s step-sister whom we’ll call “Mary”, has been dating “Mack” for five years. Mary and Mack have been living together, playing house, and trying to manage life. Mack seemed like a genuine guy. You know the type, big, burly, tattoos all over, loves Harley Davidsons, etc. Well I came to find out that aside from having the big teddy bear personality, he’s also a Level 3 Sex Offender.

Offense Statute(s): 609.344

Offense Information:
Offender has a history of sexually assaulting minors of both sexes. The contact includes fondling and penetration. The offender uses his position of authority to gain compliance and the offender was known to all the victims.

The story goes, as my wife tells it, that it happened a long time ago. That it involved someone or a couple of kids who were under the age of 13. That lvl 3 classification of course makes him a predator.

What disturbs me is that I do not know if my wife’s other family members know that he is a LVL 3. I say that because when we go over to her sister’s house during Christmas and Thanksgiving, there are kids in the house. Sure he’s supervised, sure he’s not going to do anything stupid, but, it’s a huge house, and if one is not watching, something could happen in an obscure corner somewhere.

Am I over reacting?

“Mack” up until that confession from my wife, was “Ok” in my book. I liked the guy, he had a good sense of humor, we talked about motorcycles a lot. We both ride and even though I prefer the rice models, he didn’t seem to mind. In fact, we got along really well.

You do not get classified as a LVL 3 without there being sufficient cause. This isn’t a case where you groped someone on a subway, or stood close to someone waiting in line. This is very serious.

I don’t know how it is in your state, but here in Minnesota we have a LVL 3 sex offender website. You can search it by name, county, city, etc. Yes, “Mack” is on it. It includes his mug shot, what he’s convicted of, and his supervisory status.

I am certain you are asking yourself “What about Mary?”, “Does she know?”. The answer to both of those is YES she’s known about “Mack’s” past for some time now.

I can’t imagine why any woman would be willing to spend 5+ years with someone who is a sexual predator. I can’t understand why my in-laws are not more alarmed each holiday that “He” is coming. And I can’t understand why my wife wanted me to keep this to myself.

First of all it’s a matter of public record, and if you simply look you will find it. Secondly, how can you brush this under a rug? Third, how can you trust this person to ever spend time with anyone you love and care for?

I am torn because I liked the guy, right up to the LVL 3 Sex Offender Part. I am deeply disturbed by these crimes because my own family was affected by sexual predators and that has deep scars on my side. So much so that it took me watching my grandfather suffer and die on a hospital bed to forgive him his transgressions against my mom. He never touched me, but I never forgave him for the emotional distress caused my mom until I watched him struggle with death.

Sexual abuse is one of the WORST crimes on the planet to me. Most of the victims would rather be killed during the commission of the crime than suffer through their self humiliation and self blame for what occurred.

It’s tragic really.

As far as I know, everything is continuing to go on as normal on my wife’s side of the family. That leads me to question if they know. If they do, and are ok with it, does this make me abnormal?

I want to thank Aaron for deleting my last piece I did. It helped me to rewrite it into something that I think is far better. J Thanks buddy.

As for this article, what do you think? Do you think I’m being overly sensitive? How would you handle this revelation?

I desire to open an honest discussion on how to correct a repetitive trend in foreign relations between Mexico and America. Since our country’s inception, we have had miserable relations with Mexico, to the point that I believe most diplomats and politicians refer to Mexico as the proverbial “Red-Headed Step Child”. I don’t want this to be a Mexico bashing or America bashing forum, otherwise, what’s the point right?

I harp a lot about Illegal Immigration being a plague to our way of life. By showcasing stories which illustrate the absurdity of border control versus foreign policy decisions by people who are clueless about diplomatic relations, I have hoped that my articles would illicit responses to get involved and become informed.

I am currently reading up on American History during this semester, and I tell you this because it has occurred to me that not much has changed in the way of Mexico-America relations since about 1900.

Mexico has always been run by some type of dictator, whether by military force, drug lords, or American intervention. Mexico has never had a truly democratic government run by its citizens. Does that make us bad people for trying to involve ourselves in their affairs?

Absolutely not. While we should recognize our responsibility in the fact that stability in Mexico has been a pipe dream, if we were not involved in how Mexico operates, I believe we would have an even worse illegal immigrant problem than what we are currently witnessing.

Case in point: 1913. Mexico was involved in a very large and bloody revolution. The poor essentially murdered the current President and instilled by coup general Victoriano Huerta. This revolution promoted a huge migration of Mexicans into the United States who, for the most part, spread out amongst the south western states. (New Mexico, Arizona, California, Texas, etc) This massive influx of frontier “illegals” also incited violence much the same way we witness today. (Gunfights with law enforcement, damage to property, etc.)

So what did our government do? President Woodrow Wilson basically did to the Military Dictator Huerta, what we did to the Russia/Afghanistan conflict. Supply weapons to “freedom fighters” who opposed the dictator, and let them do the dirty work. A “hands-off” approach in diplomatic relations as I like to call it.

Back then, I doubt little effort was made to promote “Nation Building”.

That also doesn’t make us terrible, but it does open the door of questions as to how different we are today, than back in Wilson’s era.

President Wilson I believe was trying to do what was right to help the impoverished citizens of Mexico, but I can only guess at his intentions. Much of my personal opinions are the same when we take a look at Ronald Reagan.
In the 1980’s little was done to stem the flow of illegals from Mexico into the U.S. It’s interesting to me when you look back on that time, we were going through a cold-war with Russia. At the same time combating an immigration headache. What surprises me most is that Russia never employed the tactics of Al-Qaeda to sneak into the country via Mexico’s porous border.

But to respond to the growing illegal immigration issues, President Reagan signed into law the Immigration Reform and Control Act. In this act, Reagan made a critical mistep in steming the flow of illegal immigration. Instead of putting a cork into the leaking dam, it only encouraged the cracks to widen.

a. Authorized legalization (i.e., temporary and then permanent resident status) for aliens who had resided in the United States in an unlawful status since January 1, 1982 (entering illegally or as temporary visitors with authorized stay expiring before that date or with the Government’s knowledge of their unlawful status before that date) and are not excludable.

b. Created sanctions prohibiting employers from knowingly hiring, recruiting, or referring for a fee aliens not authorized to work in the United States.

c. Increased enforcement at U.S. borders.

d. Created a new classification of seasonal agricultural worker and provisions for the legalization of certain such workers.

e. Extended the registry date (i.e., the date from which an alien has resided illegally and continuously in the United States and thus qualifies for adjustment to permanent resident status) from June 30, 1948 to January 1, 1972.

f. Authorized adjustment to permanent resident status for Cubans and Haitians who entered the United States without inspection and had continuously resided in country since January 1, 1982.

g. Increased the numerical limitation for immigrants admitted under the preference system for dependent areas from 600 to 5,000 beginning in fiscal year 1988.

h. Created a new special immigrant category for certain retired employees of international organizations and their families and a new nonimmigrant status for parents and children of such immigrants.

i. Created a nonimmigrant Visa Waiver Pilot program allowing certain aliens to visit the United States without applying for a nonimmigrant visa.

j. Allocated 5,000 nonpreference visas in each of fiscal years 1987 and 1988 for aliens born in countries from which immigration was adversely affected by the 1965 act.

Now, after reading the IRCA signed into law, do you see the problem? Currently, there are about 11+ million illegals and counting. Mexico has a government run by a “Presidente” that cares less about providing a solid economic future for his people, and more about burdening America with psuedo-exiled citizens who desire nothing more than to “find a job, provide for a family, etc.”

Our problem is that we still have a government in bed with Mexican leadership. We are essentially sweeping the problems of both country’s under a rug by not tackling this head on.

On one hand we have Mexico which is not respresentative of its citizens voice (even if they have “democratic” elections). They are either lacking the drive to work to better their country (which I doubt because they are hardworking people) or, they are simply fed up, and fleeing here because the only thing they have to fight here is law, rather than an inept and corrupt government. Our laws are easier to evade and fight, and I believe it’s more frustration to fight drug dealers who want you as a “mule” or dead, and a government that won’t combat a huge problem. Perhaps the lure of drug money is too much to stop it?

On the other hand, our government’s answer in the past has been to grant amnesty to people who violate our laws, care little about the common people of this country who have made America what it is today.

It’s not a simple problem, and if we look at how to fix it, that will not be an easy road to go down.

My solutions would be to:

Close the borders down. Period. If you want to cross, either you go through a checkpoint, or you fly in, either way, some guy is looking at your passport, and either saying yes, or go home.

Use the Homeland Security to go after all illegal immigrants that currently reside here and give them a ticket back home. No Amnesty. Businesses who employ illegals should be punished and fined heavily. We have laws here, either abide by them or be the next Enron scandal.

Help to change Mexico. We are rebuilding Afghanistan and Iraq, why can’t we effect positive change in Mexico? If they did more to promote companies, employment, education, and RESPONSIBILITY, they could be an economic superpower. Of course, that also means cleaning up the corruption, kicking out the drug dealers who ARE embedded in and won’t go without a fight.

And finally,

We have to stop looking at America as a free-for-all. While we are THE most charitable country, (and I’m not talking government charity, I am talking about private charity), we cannot solve the worlds problems all at once. We need to focus on the things we can solve and then go after the more complex tasks.

Illegal immigration needs to stop. No country can afford to sustain the entire world population within its borders socially, or economically. That’s half the reason we have countries and not one unified planet with seperate state territories.

Secondly, your average Joe citizen simply wants to provide for his or her family. Be it a roof over their heads, decent meals, transportation, education, or what have you. If you are going to lobby for global rights, why can’t we start there? Equal rights for every global citizen, in every country. Once you solve the economics, you can begin to focus on the other problems.

What say you?

Photo by Lutie Wilgren Krispy Kreme will close Monday, Feb. 20 after being open only a couple of years in its location in Waite Park. There are 35 employees. Troy Martin, general manager, said he does not know what the employees’ plans are after the closing, but he plans to stay with the company and work in the wholesale department. Krispy Kreme is also closing its Bloomington and Rochester locations on Monday.

Here in Minnesota, nothing wows the public like a new restaurant opening. I can recall very vividly when the Maple Grove Krispy Kreme opened. (For those of you who don’t know where Maple Grove is, think Twin Cities, then if you have a map handy, Maple Grove is located in the NW region, where the 494/694 loop converges with I-94 and heads towards Fargo. Maple Grove sits right on that convergence and has in the past few years experienced an unbelievable boom in businesses, shopping, and of course, food!)

When that Krispy Kreme opened, for weeks, you could not drive past that location, and not witness blocks and blocks of cars waiting in line to fill up on the tasty treats. Now, here in Waite Park (a neighboring city to St. Cloud), Krispy Kreme has decided to shut down for good, and with it they are taking down a Bloomington store (Bloomington = Town with Mall of America), and the Rochester store(South Eastern Minnesota).
I don’t personally like to see stores close, of course I understand the Art of Capitalism War. That being clear, I have to wonder how much of it is due to the Atkins craze. Since that silly diet came out into the open, it seems anything with a carb was declared “evil”. You could literally watch food companies scramble to come up with low or zero carb products that would safeguard or cushion their bottom line. The fact that there are still carb free or low carb products on the market shows you that this diet “theory” is here to stay.

One has to ask themself in light of the pending downfall of Krispy Kreme, whose bright idea was it to focus your entire company on one product and believe that donuts will take you into the future?

I miss Dunkin Donuts, I miss Mister Donuts, and Krispy Kreme is no Dunkin Donuts, but why is it that donut shops never last? Is it that donuts have a viscious cycle of ups and downs? From each year do donuts lose their appeal to your stomach?

Frosted, chocolate, sprinkled, powdered, sugared, one can see that these are unkind tempters to your hunger demon, but I have to feed it every now and again!

In the day of large corporations, I still see one example of mom and pop shops that make a profit, and still continue to provide a public good. Can you guess which one I am talking about?

The Bakery.

Why can a Bakery survive and a donut empire fall?

May I suggest one word: Variety of products.

Buh-bye Krispy Kreme, so nice to know ya.

We are seeking women who are attractive (who judges that is beyond me), under the age of 29 (so you hot 30 somethings nevermind, they don’t want you), SAT 1300+, (no minimum wage babes either), physically fit and maintaining a healthy lifestyle, (no comments from the peanut gallery cuz you can already form your own questions for that one). If you have a desire to help an infertile family (nevermind the fact that the top of the ad begged you to think about the monetary gains) and would like more information please contact us. Email: darlene@aperfectmatch.com www.aperfectmatch.com 1.800.264.8828

I know this ad begs the question as to how ethical and moral it is for a company, or person, to set up a business, whose <strike>soul</strike> sole focus is providing the super babies to the people who can afford them, while exploiting, hot young, financially in debt women with questionable ethical or moral dilemmas.

I’m not trying to get pro-lifer or anything like that, but ethically? morally? who are you trying to kid here? I think that this ad, specifically run in a student newspaper, you have to ask yourself how far is too far?

I mean, blogging about illegal immigrants is one thing, those people are exploited by the left who don’t care about the plight of illegals anymore than anti-abortionist extremist care when people die while bombing a clinic.

The way I see this is, is purely exploitative, and if you’ve seen the movie Gattaca you’d know what I’m getting at.
